My 8800 recently got the boot for a 4870

my 8800 was plagued with the hissing/whining noise from the card.

The 4870 is even worse.

I am able to hear high pitch noises that most people can not. I however do not think that this is the case with the card. What I'm trying to figure out is if it is my card that is the problem or if its me.

Frequency of the gpu/mem does have an effect on the pitch of the noise

500/500 or 800/1100 both are extremely annoying - to the point I can't play games at night due to me not being able to turn my speakers up.

Summarized in one line: Does anyone else have a hiss/whine when doing anything involving a 4870 (games, folding, furmark)?

Not swap PSUs... I have the PC Power & Cooling too.... swap the CONNECTORS. Ie; my PC Power & Cooling has 4 PCI-E connectors. I was getting bad squealing from my 4870X2. Trying random shit, I left the six-pin plugged in and changed the eight-pin to another cable. I was surprised to see the whining in 3D apps went down significantly.

The 4870 takes two six-pins... if you do have the PC Power & Cooling 750W that means you have 4 connectors to choose from. If a certain combo makes the card squeal, try swapping them around. I know it's a single rail, I am not an electrician. For some reason changing the power connectors around really affects the squealing on my card.

I've heard this is caused by sub-standard capacitors. If I load up Stalker SOC, the intro logos all generate a different whine.

It's annoying but not worth going through Powercolor's undoubtedly shitty RMA process.

ye, i get whining but only in certain situations like intro screens or some games where the load is not too much. doesn't bother me as i don't think it is doing any damage(hopefully) nor do i hear it with headphones on which is what i am using more and more.
