I have Win 2K. To address the "svchost has generated error" problem

http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/Win2000/Q_20707803.html

I have been trying to install the SP4 update/fix to this problem -- but to no avail. The error happens and the virus prevents me from updating and fixing this problem.

I am planning to re-format, but it occured to me that i may need to zero-fill the drive. Does anyone have experience with this kind of problem? Is such a drastic measure really necessary?

I'd prefer just to re-format and install the OS, but if I have to, I will "nuke" it.

A lot of people might disagree with me. But whenever I get a computer with a virus. If it is bad enough I can't get rid of it and format is the only option. I will low level format the drive.

According to what virus you have and where it resides, sometimes it's better to do a low level format to make sure there's nothing infecting the Master Boot Record and reinfection when you load the OS. It always makes me feel better anyway. :)
