i have a problem with my comp. i think i have a virus. when i start up an internet browser it takes me to a site where it tells me to buy some software. it takes me to http://malwarewiped.com/?aid=246. i have tried removing it from the system startup, i tried doing a system restore, and i don't know where it is to delete it. can anyone help?

What a/v software are you using? What browser?

Download the 30 day free trial of NOD32 and see what it finds....

And check to make sure that your hamepage has not been changed..

im using norton, opera and internet explorer, and the homepage has been changed.

also it makes a system tray icon saying i need to buy some crap.

I am being serious when I say this, but is a reformat and reinstall an option for you? Because I'm guessing that is going to be the best solution.

You should at least try NOD32, although having Norton active in the background will likely fuck up any chances it has of helping you, but it's worth a shot.

Get the free NOD32/64 trial, Adaware aned Spybot...run them all of them....at least one will find the malware and get rid of it. After that install Spywareblaster which will help keep malware off of your computer before it can get on.

As previous posters say, but first disable system restore, then scan yout computer in safe mode with ad-aware, spybot and the antivirus of your choice :D

Also, when doing the scans, make sure you are running them in Safe Mode
Not sure why you are having trouble with it, but you should be able to edit the registry/msconfig and remove them from startup.

*edit, beaten by OldMX :p

As Major has stated already, it sounds more like spyware and browser hijacks than some virus problem. But it wouldn't hurt to do both ;)

Ewido is real nice too.

We need a new TV show called "You've goooot MALWARE"

Your system restores are destroyed. Disable to reomve all the past resotres as stated previously.
The best solution:
If you have a second computer(PC2), pull your Hard drive out of the problem computer(PC1) and intstall it in PC2.
I highly recommend buying a IDE/SATA to usb cable for these instances!
Run full scans with everything you have.
Windwos defender is useless!
Use the listed apps mentioned above..
Make sure you are using NOD32 2.7 with latest updates currently 2043!
Been a strong member of the ESET community for 3 years. Awesome stuff!
NOD32 2.7 now supports rootkit search and removal. But I highly recommend you run a rootkit search and removal tool. Search google to the latest links.
Also run a McAfee online scan for the hell of it if you want to blow some more time..

The higher level malware this year will be including root kits. Root kits are currently at a level at which a decent malware pragrammer can include them..
Be prepared!
