How challenging would it be to get this old OS working in a modern virtualized environment? I'm not planning on doing something like this any time soon but I may sometime within the next 6 months need to consider it. The machine runs on our local LAN and has an specific type of external modem for remote access. Getting the modem/remote access isn't as important as getting it to work on the LAN.
At work, I've got a fairly old machine running a legacy finance application. We no longer use it in any fashion except to reference prior data before our switch to something newer. As such, I went to talk to my boss about disconnecting the modem for remote dialing and somewhere during that discussion, it turns out my company no longer has any official support for that machine. I about had a heart attack on hearing that and even though I'm only a part timer there (and only IT staff), I still have a fair amount of influence over technical decisions.I asked if they had any plans on what to do if the machine failed and they don't.
I've been playing around with Virtualbox so I got to thinking about virtualization. While doing so, I've been able to create a virtual machine from a physical XP desktop and get it up and running but I have a feeling getting something just a tad older and temperamental might be more difficult. If I even decide to go ahead with such an idea, it won't be for some time but I probably should be planning now.
