VirtualBox 3 now supports SMP

Sub'ed, because I'm interested in seeing how this will work out. Are you guys implying that the new virtual box will use up to 32 cores *in one VM*, or simply that it's capable of handling more than a single core now? It's been a while singe I used Virtual box because I thought that VMWare Server handled the virtualization better. might be worth checking out again.
 
This will be great.

Vbox is awesome, it already can easily be made portable.
Can you imagine portable SMP folding...swing swing.

That is the old version of VirtualBox (2.6 instead of the new 3), which does not allow multi-core VMs. That issue was addressed in the thread: http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?p=73393&sid=74a66e50e9d2a29bafbe9723098681dd#p73393

This new version should support multiple cores within a VM, so hopefully it'll work. I wasn't able to convert my notfred's VM into the proper format for VirtualBox; I'm going to try to do it with a fresh copy of notfred's, and if that doesn't work I'll just start from scratch and make a normal Linux-based VM like the Fedora one I already have running in VMWare.

If you use a fresh Notfreds it *Should work* as Vbox supports the .vmdk format.
If not just grab the notfreds CD and mount the image....thats what I did for Hyper-V

.vmdk is just the disk image part of the VM. VirtualBox doesn't support .vmx files, only .ovf. I found a .vmx to .ovf converter made by VMWare, but VirtualBox wouldn't accept the converted VM. I'll try the CD image thing though; that sounds like a good idea :).
 
No what you do is import the .vmdk to vbox's media manager thing.
Create a new VM....linux with whatever settings you like, and instead of creating a new HDD attach the notfreds one.

I did that with Backtrack3, and Ubuntu VM's I downloaded.
Worked fine.
 
I see. I'm in the process of downloading the CD image, but in the meantime I'll give that a try.
 
Works like a charm. I have it up and running using all four cores. I have it shut off now since I'm finishing off some units I have going in my VMWare VMs, but after that I think I'll be using this from now on.
 
The VM stopped connecting to the internet to download the F@H software for some odd reason. I'm not sure what the cause is, but it's too late for me to spend a lot of time fiddling around with it. I'm back to VMWare until I spend some time tomorrow to figure out the problem.

By default VBox sets networking to NAT
I have had the best luck using Bridged.
 
You Guys do know that you can run VMware products on 4 cores now right .....

VMware Workstation and Player can run on 4 logicial cores ....

Perfect for SMP -4 support

I tried both; no luck either way. The weird thing is that it randomly worked once or twice and then went back to not working. I'll try it a few more times and see if it works out.

I did not know that. I use VMWare Server though, but if I can't get VirtualBox to work I'll download Player and hopefully that won't give me any grief.

Ok so I have virtual box 3.0 installed and have ubuntu 8.04 x64 running as a guest OS and it correctly sees all 4 cores. However whenever I run fah the following happens every single time after downloading the core:

[16:13:11] Verifying core Core_a2.fah...
[16:13:11] Signature is _NOT_ valid on given file.
[16:13:11] Failed to verify core
[16:13:11] + Error: Could not extract core
[16:13:11] + Core download error (#2), waiting before retry...

And it just constantly retries....

Yeah, I had that a few times when I was able to get the networking to work. I was actually able to get it to work perfectly one time (which I made a post about), and then after I shut it down to let my other VMs finish it wouldn't work properly any more. I'm not sure what the problem is.
 
Okay, so now the problem is that the virtual machine running at full load completely cripples the performance of everything else to the point where the system is unusable, even with it set to low priority. Any ideas on how to deal with that?

In bridged mode, do you have your router setup to give the VM an IP?

I got notfred's appliance running in VirtualBox, but I can't seem to change the settings on the Folding application (my username, team, etc.). The only reconfigure option I get is "Reconfigure any USB drives", but that doesn't work. Anybody have any luck with changing the settings?

Well, I just made an ISO and got it working with that.

The VM is manually configured with a fixed IP address.

When the VM is assigned an IP, that address will be displayed. Open that address in a browser and you will access the web configuration for the VM through which you can configure all of the settings.
 
btw for those that are using bridged networking.. go into your network connections.. look and see if there is a VM network connection.. if there is.. right click on it.. preferences.. then select the VMware bridge protocol.. it might be under a different name for virtualbox3.. that is if there it even shows up under the network connections..

Yup, sure did. As I mentioned earlier, what I thought was weird was that I was getting an option of ""Reconfigure any USB drives". It should be something along the lines of "Reconfigure this client and any USB drives", shouldn't it?

Well, it seems to be working fine with the notfred's Folding CD. It's bogging my machine down quite a bit even with the priority dropped to "Low" in Windows, so I think I'm going to pursue the 4-core VMWare options a bit further.
 
Zero are you using WinAFC for affinity/priority on that box?

I dont have a quad core machine at my disposal ATM, would you mind trying winAFC to see if that helps with the system responsiveness?
 
I was trying to get f@h working with ubuntu 8.04 on windows 7 RC 64 and I was having problems similar to what everyone else is saying. So I made a new VM with ubuntu 9.04 and so far it seems to be working much better, I don't know how that would have made a difference though. It will take some time to see how the stability will compare to VMware but if VirtualBox ends up working better it will be nice only running one VM, and yes I saw the thread about unlocking 4 cores on VMware.

WinAFC is not necessary since the VM is meant to use all four cores which it is assigned to automatically, and it is also automatically set to the lowest priority. I do use Bill2's Process Manager for automatic affinity/priority setting in general, but in this particular case it wouldn't help at all.
 
I got everything set up flawlessly and I do like the idea of having to only run one VM instead of the 2 that I'm currently running with VMWare player.
I'm having the same problem that has been mentioned about the huge overall system performance hit.
I also noticed that the PPD on both my Q9450 and Q6600 dropped quite a bit so I'm back to VMware for now.
I'll have to get workstation I guess to run the 4 cores since player doesnt wan't to do it.
