VMware Workstation 7 i think is the best solution out there for desktop Virtualization And 3D
Yeah, VMware Workstation or its free player, VMWare Player 3, does 3D OpenGL and Direct3D.
Be wary that:
1. There is no AGP texture acceleration, so games that rely on 2D graphics for menus or something else will not run properly or be displayed at all.
2. Most advanced 3D games will have performance and/or graphics issues.
(Don't expect to run any game post 2005 or 2007, or something.)
Also, for some odd reason, VMWare Fusion for Mac runs more 3D games better than VMWare Workstation 7. Friend can run Final Fantasy XI in VMWare Fusion, but I can't run it in VMWare Workstation 7. I asked on the VMWare Forums and they tell me that both are functionally the same. Yeah, fucking right. ~_~;;;
So far, games that I have tested and runs without issue so far are:
- Mabinogi
- Pangya
- Grand Chase
(They're Korean MMOs because many of them have issues in Windows 7 64-bit.)
I have yet to test other games, but Dead to Rights will probably work.
Again, Windows XP Mode DOES NOT HAVE 3D ACCELERATION WHATSOEVER.
It can run 2D games from what I've read around on the Internet. It is also an emulator, not a virtual machine, since it's based on Virtual PC. You can read the sticky as well.
Another alternative is VirtualBox, but I have not been able to run anything 3D-wise in it successfully. Following all instructions on their website and forum, and any 3D game I launch crashes Windows XP in VirtualBox. It could be me, but I'll probably test it more later.
