Virtual Pcs as replacement for old comps?

Hey i just tried this at my work

Ran two copies of xp using virtual pc, enable remote desktop for both

Went to old computer.
Remote to the virtual pc and use them.

The speed using the virtual pc seems faster than accessing programs on the pc itself. So is this a method to not replace old computers?
 
there are more efficient ways of hosting the VM's. using paravirtualization adds a fair bit of overhead. you should look at a terminal services server, citrix, or VDI. But, then again, this might be sufficient. You're just using old hardware as a thin client.

Which one can run a virtual xp or vista. where old pc are acting as like thin clients

That would be VDI(VMWare View or Citrix XenDesktop). Citrix XenApp(Old Metaframe)/Terminal Services run on Server OS's.

VDI is kinda like what you did on your PC but more automated. Most of the VDI packages allow you to create a list of base images with certain applications, then apply security filters. When say a user in accounting fires up the client, the VDI broker fires up a VM with the accounting image.

Terminal servers are a single OS that multiple users log into and execute processes simultaneously.

Basically, anything that has a 8MB+ video card can run something like ICA/RDP clients.
 
What about wmware workstation? is that just running multiple on same comp and not have to do with letting other comps be thin clients connecting to the workstation?
 
VMWare workstation is more for testing/development. You could run multiple thin clients off of a PC running workstation, but It would be a bit on the duct tape side.
