I just started a new position with a company I previously did a bit of Network admin consulting work for. Took a management position, but i"m still involved in operations and implementation work.
I'd like to redo their present virtual infrastructure backup system to something a bit more reliable and hopefully shorten the backup window.
Right now all of our storage is on 2000 series (2050) NetApp filers. They currently use vRanger to do LAN based backups of the virtual machines to a staging server (x86 box with a bunch of large ATA disks) and then have a backup exec job that copies the staged data to external devices (data robotics drive enclosures full of 2 TB drives.
Obviously slow.
So, I'm moving towards doing LAN free backups over the fabric (it's all FC NetApp storage) by throwing a Qlogic fiber HBA into the backup server (the one running vranger and backup exec) and I'd like to buy some type of DAS array for staging, likely an MD3000 or some type of SAS array, and a SAS LTO tape loader, so I can do automated backups to tape.
Just wondering what others are doing?
