And they won't exist a year from now, this is not news, it's an preemptive obituary. :D

Virgin Mobile is the prepaid brand of Sprint. Usually carriers use their fully owned prepaid subsidiary brands to target more price conscious customers. I agree this seems a little odd. I wonder how much Apple is paying as part of this deal.

However, bear in mind that Sprint is also running a 1 year-free unlimited promotion at the moment at the main Sprint brand for people who bring select unlocked Nexus, Galaxy S7-8, iPhone, Motos etc from other carriers. Sprint seems pretty desperate for customers right now.
 
Gut reaction is that tech support will be easier and that is the reason for the change.
