Well this isn't really a computer mod, but it's definetly the place to get good advice about this subject.

I'm looking to "paint" my Freak Barrell System with some Vinyl Dye. Why? Because everyone has the same damn black case, and I'm the kind of person that thinks about all the ways my knowledge of computer modding can be applied to anything. Like wanting to put a window in my CD player. Anyways, the surface on this kit is not smooth. It's a bumpy surface, like you would find on a plastic tool case/drill case. Will the vinyl dye work on this, or would it just seep down to the lower parts and give me a weird look to it. And another question, would sanding down the case help in painting?

If anyone can tell me the feasabilitiy of this it would be much appreciated. I would definetly like to "personalize" my Freak Kit.

It should coat nice and soak into everything, however it may take a few more light coats to get even color everywhere, Also I don’t know how raised the pattern is, but it wouldn’t hurt to shoot it from different angles to make sure you have no paint shadow areas :) I would recommend using Plasti-kote Vinyl Color, ive had AWSOME results with it. In fact painted my xbox just last weekend and it came out great (Pics as soon as i finish the mods).

Remember Vinyl dye isn’t paint at all, make your coats nice and light, and let it dry for about 15 min between sprays so your not getting runs. The lighter you go, the faster it dries. It will make the plastic soft for about 12 hours so let it sit once your done

oh yeah... POST PICS!

Stupid question though, what’s a "Freak Barrel System" I would assume musical device?

I think he is talking about the Freak Barrel Kit for paintballing. Has so many inserts that it requires a case. That's all I know... Sorry. :p

OK... the low down on a Freak Barrel Kit:

It's for those of us crazy enough about paintball that we get everything we can to give us the extra edge over the comptetition. Retails about $180, comes with a barrel back, a barrel front, and eight insters. The eight inserts slide into the barrel back to change the bore size of the barrel. What sets them apart is that they all vary in bore size.

The basic idea is this: You have paintballs sold in .68 caliber. But not all paintballs are the same. Some are around .679 caliber, and some get as high as .691 and up. There are some outside of these ranges, but most are manufactured near .68. Anyways, when shooting paint you want to use the bore size that is the tightest fit for your paintball. This will increase the amount of air that is going behind the paintball, and decrease the amount that is going around it. Simply put, if you want to shoot something at 300 FPS you want all the force BEHIND it, and not AROUND it. The air going around it screws with accuracy and distance.

Basically you want the tightest fit for your paint, and the Freak Kit gives you the versatility to get that tight fit. The same effect could be reproduced with one barrel and the right paint, BUT paintball sizes can vary with weather conditions and the brand of paint, so the chances of you having the perfect barrel size and paint size without some sort of barrel system are slim. Also, regular barrels are manufactured around .68 caliber. The Freak is gaurunteed to be accurate to the bore size on the insert.

I'll make sure to do some pics. Also might do my brother's Freak case and his Plano paintball case. Everyone's getting the damn Plano, and they all look the same.

Feet per second. The standard velocity used in paintballing. It's hard enough to hurt, don't worry :D

Alright well I think I'm going to look into this mod tonight. I'll be heading down to the auto store shortly. I'll be sure to post pics!

I could find any Vinyl Dye, and couldn't find anyone that knew where it would be carried around town. I checked O'Riely's Auto Parts, Advanced Auto Parts, Lowe's, and Menard's... all with no luck. Which is pretty gay. So I went from AAP to Menards saying, "If I don't find any Vinyl Dye, I'm buying Krylon Fusion." At Menards... they didn't have Vinyl Dye, or Krylon Fusion. After that I went to Lowe's to pick up some Krylon Fusion. Didn't have any there, bastards. I ended up getting American Tradtion Plastic Enamel from Lowe's.

All in all, the rattle can selection sucked, and so did the variety of colors. I ended up with a navy blue (I was hoping for royal blue, which is a better contrast from black). Needless to say, next time I'll be ordering online.

I just finished doing the outside of the case. All in all it has about three decent coats. I'll try to do all of the inside tomorrow. And yes, pictures are on the way.

K, I feel dumb. I have discovered my problem.

I went everywhere, asking for Vinyl Dye. Every place said they did not have it. But I noticed a lot of Vinyl COLOR. I thought I recalled being told not to buy it because it's just like a spraypaint and that's not what I wanted. So I went googling once again and saw that the guide over at Gideontech (which I read before) clearly showed a guy using a can that said Vinyl COLOR on it. So basically the stores had what I needed but I just didn't realize it. I'm dumb. I might go and get some still because I don't like the Navy Blue color too much.
