Vintage Sony Speaker Problems

I have a pair of Sony SS-950's that are giving me trouble when I plug them into my amp. Now, I realize I can't exactly expect speakers this old to work perfectly, but I was wondering if anyone could help me identify the problem.

After a certain amount of time, one of the channels becomes whisper-quiet. One way to fix this is to switch the speaker wires around from L to R and vice versa, though this doesn't last very long. Also, the speakers seem excessively boomy, lacking the treble they seemed to possess a few years ago.
