Hey guys, I'm looking into purchasing my first lcd, and have a rough understanding of the various specifications. Through work I get a discount on Viewsonic which ends up being ~$15 cheaper than newegg. I was looking at the two models mentioned in the thread title, and was wondering which one you guys would go with. The 922 has a quicker response time, but the 920 can display more colors. This is going to be for more general-purpose than outright gaming, so I'm leaning towards the 920. I definitely want < 8ms response time. Any input is appreciated :)

Ive heard great things about the VX922, and how bright and vibrant the colours are, so I would pick that.

But the colour advantage and egronomic stand does sound pleasing. You did know that the VP series has a 0 dead or stuck pixel policy? Meaning that if you get problems with any pixels at all, even just 1 you can return it.

I dont know to be honest. :) Sorry I know I wasnt of much help.
 
if its not a outright gaming rig, then go for the VP920.

Both have the same TN film panel.

TN film is not great for all round usage, P-MVA (found in a VP930) or S-IPS is.

I would go for the VP920, as it has 6ms G2G, which is more than enough for gaming!

I've never heard of the different film panel types, is it something worth really considering, or is it one of those things that some people notice and care about, and others just don't?

bump - how do you tell the difference between film panel types? I've looked closely at the specs but I think I just don't know what I'm looking for...

The trick is how to spot TN panels. Usually but not always they will be labelled as 16.2 million colors, if not we go to viewing angles. Most TN panels are not wide in viewing angles, vertical and horizontal viewing angles will not match either. If the angles are less than 170 degrees then it is likely TN e.g. 150°(H) / 135°(V). Contrast Ratio is improving in TN panels so this is generally not the best indicator, but on average they are lower than VA panels. VA panels now boast over 1000:1 contrast ratio, however some LG LCD's with TN panels exceed 1000:1 but this may be due to dynamic contrast ratio which is a technique that uses automatic brightness adjustment to achieve higher contrast ratio. Generally IPS and TN have around the same contrast ratio in newer panels but you can easily tell those apart by viewing angles. S-IPS panels have 178°(H) / 178°(V) viewing angles, which is almost perfect. Lastly you can look at response times, TN have lower response times then other panels.
 
^Thanks for the info, that helped a lot. I may push it to the VP930b, I can get it for only $300 through work. It's 16.7 million colors, 170 degree viewing angle both ways, 8ms response time.
 
The viewera is equally as good as the viewsonic VP30, I would go for the cheaper one. Both have the same panel and specs and dead pixel warranty so the price is mainly on looks!

Yeah, I'm just worried about the viewera. I did a quick search and didn't find much in the way of reviews, and I've never heard of that brand before.
 
I tried one of those viewera's as my first LCD. I got it because of the no dead pixel policy and I heard that the 8ms response time was all you needed for gaming. It wasn't fast enough for my likes and I went back to my CRT within days. For general gaming it's a fine monitor with really nice colors. So if your not a serious gamer I'd personally recommend the viewera.It is deffinetly a good quality monitor. I myself have a 922 and will keep it until it dies. Oh and I'd also like to add that the viewera was far better for DVD watching then the 922.
 
I just ordered myself a VX922 last night. I hope this thing is fast. I'm coming from a 21" CRT and can't play on 8ms LCDs. I'll find out soo enough.
 
I ended-up ordering the VP930b today. I really wanted a display that would let you adjust the height, which was another plus in it's favor. I think I'll be ok with 8ms as I don't play a lot of fps's.
 
Woo! Just got it today, it looks fantastic. I love how adjustable it is too, slides up and down, pivots back and forth.

My only complaint is that my desk is kinda flimsy so it tends to wobble a bit when I'm typing really fast.
