Similair to many people problems with the DVI port, I have the same problem but with my VGA connector, where instead of EDID information getting corrupted, my computer doesn't receive the DDC information. Checked on different computers, and did a complete reinstall, so it's definitely the monitor. And yes, it happened also during a certain uninstall of the system after working great for a while.
I can't get the resolution to configure on 1680x1050 only 1280x1024, after working very well on 1680x1050 for a while.
Viewsonic support was no help whatsoever. I would definitely recommend people don't buy this product, even if when it worked, it worked well. It's a nightmare to fix these things.
Any ideas of what to do.

Planned to try it, but the problem seemed more to be that I couldn't get the right resolution to be a possibility (and I wasn't sure the EDID would pass through such a converter). After much research, powerstrip worked. At least for now it seemed to solve the problem. I still think it is something in the monitor as it is exactly the same as people described for the DVI, but perhaps it's something with windows. Don't know. In any case, prescribing a the new resolution 1680x1050 with powerstrip works for now. Thanks for answering.

It does sound like a software problem though, otherwise why would it display 1680 x 1050 now?
 
Well, the lack of DDC information is a problem with the monitor (as I also tried it with another computer, a completely new one. Also, it seems to be a corruption that comes after an uninstall of display drivers or in my case a system restore.) How afterwards your display drivers deal with it is maybe more a software issue. I gathered the .inf file is supposed to take care of this, but somehow with regards 1680x1050 it didn't work (ATI mobility Radeon card). I'm guessing ATI (and Nvidia) have their reasons to not well support this resolution, but until widescreen is a basic resolution to choose from in your display properties, independent of .inf files and 3-rd party programs, then unless you have a very good reason to be wanting widescreen, I'd certainly suggest going with 4:3 monitors.

It's relatively sorted out thank you. At least superficially so. The DDC information is still not there which has its small annoyances, but it works fine for now.
