Which do you guys think is better. The VP912B (19" 1280x1024 12ms response time) or the VP201B (20.1" 1600x1200 16ms response time)? Is it worth sacrificing response time for a higher resolution? Is it noticable when going from 16ms to 12ms response time? Price is not an issue.

i dont think 12 and 16 are that far apart...i have a 25ms monitor and my buddy has 12 or 16, and honestly i cant even tell a difference between the two, but he swares he can...i say go for the 20.1 incher

both are nice screens.
I don't see any ghosting in the 16ms model. But others say it's very blurry. It seems to depend on the quality of your eyes and your level of anal retention. Check out a 16ms screen running in a store. If you don't see any ghosting, go for the VP201. If you do, go for the VP912.

1600x1200 requires a beefy video card, but I'm sure with a username like yours you're already packing a 6800

the VP912 is a very nice screen and it will give you 12ms bragging rights. You can then pretend you see ghosting on all screens with lesser response times :)

The only thing I would be worried about would be if my system could handle gaming at 1600x1200 (native resolution of the VP201b), since lower resolutions won't look as good.

If gaming isn't your cup of tea, or if your system can handle 16x12,I guess the VP201b is a better choice.

Edit: Being at work and not pressing submit until a couple of hours later makes you look like a fool (read post above)

Haha thanks guys. I do have a Gainward 6800 GT Golden Sample. Hmm I don't know of any stores around my area that has both lcds where I can go in and see. The only places that really are computer related are Best Buy, Circuit City and Comp USA. None of those stores carry them. What to do what to do... with 12ms I'm almost guaranteed no ghosting but lower resolution... so hard to decide

IMO 1280x1024 has no purpose. Its not a resolution for gaming, and any resolution works for windows. 1600x1200 is quite a plus.

By the way, I'm getting my VP201s tomorow...I'll try to remember this thread and say how the ghosting is. I dont think that will be the problem, though. Have you seen the "VP201 mini-review"? Its a thread on this board, might be on second page.

Please do. I'm considering this monitor and am looking for all the little bits of info I can find. What made you pick it over the 2001fp, if I may ask?

No kidding on the "anal retentive" part...blows me away sometimes ;)

Well for one thing, buying the Dell 2001FP would have meant ordering online, and I dont do that...certainly not for a LCD monitor of all things.

They say the VP201 has the best stand to date. That's a plus. The whole thing also looks much better than the 2001FP (design).

Viewsonic has the best warranty for dead pixels and such. I'll give you a link with loads of details about this, if you can read it, but its in french. Sadly, best warranty or not...its still not very good if you ask me.

The VP201 has a USB hub (on the panel, by the VGA and DVI connectors), but I cant honestly remember if the 2001FP has one. I think its 1 imput and 4 outout, though. I'm not sure what the outputs would be used for. I'm just hoping I'll be able to plug my mouse in the imput. But thinking about it, that probably wont work. Oh well.

VP201's panel moves "better" than on other LCDs, a review said. But does that really matter...

The 2001FP on the other hand, is supposed to have an S-video imput, so you can plug your consoles in there (using an adapter, I guess). I would love that, but I think the image would be terrible. The PS2 and Xbox only display in 640x480, after all (I think. it cant be higher, since older TVs dont go up to 800x600). Still, to me that's the 2001FP's strong point, the thing that made me hesitate.

I think that's it. Everything else I can think of, both monitors share. The price is pretty much the same, from all I've seen. If I regret my choice, it will be for taking the VP201 over a quality CRT, I'm sure. Because I could have got a very good 19' for 300-350$, and the VP201 is 1150$. It better be good!

By the way, I went for a 20' because of the 1600x1200 resolution (I'm a gamer, I want the 4:3 aspect).

I agree that the 1280x1024 sucks for gaming. I have checked out that thread and it's great. It gives a lot of info on the VP201. I'm sure it's great. Just I haven't been about to find a post that compares its performance against then VP912. I haven't been able to find a post that states whether the difference of 4ms really affects gaming. I've been trying to find comparisons of the two for awhile now to no avail. I'm still stuck dead between the two... darn Viewsonic. You guys should have made the VP912 native 1600x1200. Of course the extra inch on the VP201 is a great plus as well...

Go to a store. They may not have either Viewsonic, but they're likely to have at least one 16ms screen. It should give you a rough idea of how the VP201 performs.

If you can't be stuffed doing that then just get the VP201.
I have a Dell2001FP which has the same screen and it's great. I think the Viewsonic has the best looking case and stand of all the 20" screens and would have got one myself if the price in Australia wasn't insane.

Well, its done. I got it :)

I wish I could review it now, but I need to ask a question first (new thread) and play some games. From what I've seen though (in 1024x768 in Doom 3 and Thief 3) there is zero ghosting. Of course, my framerate is far from perfect; the result may be different if you have a constant 60+ FPS.

I'll get back to you. For now I'll just say this: its big, and its looks nice. But I find the screen is not as clear as it could be. This is going to hurts my eyes, unless I find find a way to make it better.

By the way, I havent seen a hint of screen door effect. Admitedly, I'm standing at 2 feet from the monitor, but on this font I cant see it even at one feet.

The VP201. I'm still trying to figure out why I cant use 32-bit in 1600x1200 (DVI). I finally tested VGA and it works fine - but very blurry. Really need to find a way to do it in DVI.

Oh well, I'll say something in the meantime. VP201 of course:

First, the stand indeed rocks. And the bezel is very thin, as they say. Esthetically, it looks good.

Right now I'm having that "1600x1200 32-bit in DVI trouble", so I'm using 1280x960 32-bit. Despite not being the native res, it looks good. 1024x768 isnt all that great, and its too small for the monitor anyway (IMO). 800x600 is downright horrible, but I couldnt care less.

I'm using 120dpi fonts, ClearType, and another option that makes text a tad bigger. Looks good, but I wish it was sharper. I'm very demanding when ti comes to sharpness. However, I'm looking at the screen from 1 1/2 to 2 feet away.

From the little gaming I've done (mostly in 1280x960x32 DVI), it looks great. I'm not disappointed on this. The colors may not be the best, but I knew they wouldnt be (reviews). Its not the Samung 213T, after all (which costs a lot more, and has a 25ms response).

No ghosting. Oh there was a tiny bit of ghosting when I played Tales of Destiny 2 (PSX game, emulated). When the character ran fast, he had a sort of motion blur following him. It was nothing, I assure you. That was at 60 FPS, too. I say its a great monitor for games.

Sadly, blacks are not black. Doom 3 and Thief 3, both very dark games, were gray rather than dark. Not too dark a gray, at that. Brownish. I didnt like that. Messing with the contrast/brightness settings might help, though. But even so, if you often play very dark games à la Doom 3, you'll be disappointed. 'course, not many games are like that. The white is very white to me, no issue there.

[Edit: I use V-sync. There was flickering otherwise.]

No backlight leak for me.
No dead pixel that I can see without using test software.
No noise that I can hear because of contrast setting. My hearing isnt very good however.

[Edit: The USB hub is nice. An imput on the panel connects to a USB port on your comp, then the panel's USB outputs can be used for a mouse, keyboard, webcam, printer, etc. There's 4 outputs. Really usefull if your USB cables arent very long.]

I'll post when I can think of something else.

Hey, good luck on the monitor. let us know how you learn to like/dislike it.

Just thought i'd mention, I saw on viewsonics site that 16ms is equivalent to a 62 fps framerate, while the 12ms is a tad over 80. It seems like 62 should be fine, then again people claim the human eye can't see faster than ~35fps and we all know 35 looks like $hit. Oh well... good luck with it.

EDIT: forgot to mention, I read somewhere on these forums that 32-bit is only a CRT thing, 24-bit is the full color setting for LCD. Something about the extra 8-bits having to do with the way the CRT works, but 24-bit is not less color than 32 when comparing CRT and LCD.

Wow MadLyon. That just made my decision that much harder. I was leaning towards the VP912 but now I don't know. With the VP912 there should be zero ghosting where the VP201 has minimal right? Wow so hard... Are the colors on the VP912 better than the VP201? IE. the black colors issue?

Well, for better or worse, I've made my decision - I went with the VP201B. I'm at the nervous "it hasn't arrived and I'm worried about my decision and dead pixels" stage.

Thanks Inside_line :)

PlaidJello: I hope you'll be pleased with your decision! Let us know what you think about it.

HARDcoregamER: Sorry :D. I havent seen the VP912, so I cant say. They use different panels, so there should be a difference...but which is best, I have not a clue. Unless I'm mistaken, the biggest difference must be the max resolution (1600x1200 vs 1280x1024) and the price. I'm sure the VP912 is a good monitor too. Different panel, but how different can it be?

About the ghosting: it was so minimal that it was almost inexistant, if you ask me. I noticed none in Tribes 2 (anywhere between 30 and 140 FPS). You'd to have compare two monitors side by side to see ghosting in a FPS, I think.

Sorry, I wish I could help make your decision. It took me weeks to make mine.

Well... If I was to go with the VP201, which would be better then VP201 or the Dell 2001FP? The 2001FP is much cheaper. Are they from the same panel?

The panel itself is supposed to be the very same (VP201, 2001FP, and a few others use it). If the 2001FP is a lot cheaper...sounds good. I wonder how cheap, though? While I'm rather pleased with my monitor, its not perfect. And it cost me far, far too much (1150$ canadian, about 925 USD?).

Aaah, I dont know what to tell you. I dont want you - or anyone - to be disappointed. It was hard enough deciding my own purchase...

Well right now dell is selling the 2001FP for $679.20 before tax and shipping. I was able to find the VP201B for $799.99 before tax and shipping and $865.99 after taxes and shipping. What to do... I appreciate everyone's opinion and I don't blame anyone for anythign decision I make. I'm sure whichever decision I make I will not regret. Just hard making it...
