Viewsonic VP231WB with 8ms Panel (apparently)

Hi All

Apparently, the Viewsonic VP231WB monitor is about to start shipping with an 8ms Panel as opposed to a 16ms one (presumably using overdrive). This comes from Viewsonic sales in UK.

However, I would treat this with some scepticism as the person who I spoke to was a complete muppet who didn't even know what Viewsonic's own warranty service was let alone what overdrive was.

They are probably using the new measurement schemes which give lower response times. Instead of measuring black to white response, they measure gray to gray response.

It's a horrible marketing scheme for consumers like us because we really never know whether a panel is 8ms gray to gray or 8ms black to white. I feel better back a monitor with specs using the old measurement scheme. In the end, both won't truly keep a steady response of 8ms. They are probably more like 16ms to even 35ms. Just look at the latency graphs in some reviews.
 
could be based on the new au optronics SMVA that's used in the 191b, apparently they were going to release a 23inch model based on the same tech that's used in the 191b panel. So we could have a sub 16ms across the whole colour range large screen panel finally.

That is interesting as AU Optronics have 2 new 23" panels in production right now that are meant to be 8ms response rates (grey-grey), which means that if they are anything like the VP191 that their real response rate is below 16ms in all circumstances, which is great. One of these panels is LED backlit, but I don't think the Viewsonic has that.

Further, the good thing about these panels is that the pixel pitch is smaller than the Samsung panel equivalents of .258mm instead of .27mm.

Of course the pixel pitch is smaller since the screen itself is smaller too (23" vs. 24"). All LCDs that are the same size and have the same resolution will always have the same pixel pitch too.

I never thought about that - good point if that is indeed the case.

M230UW01 V0 - 23" P-MVA, 8ms G2G, 700:1 contrast ratio, LED Backlight

M230UW01 V1 - 23" P-MVA, 8ms G2G response time, 800:1 contrast ratio, CCFL backlight, 170/170 viewing angles
