Viewsonic VP191b is now 16ms ???

Hi guys,

Check out the viewsonic web site. They now claim the VP191b is 16ms typical refresh rate.

This monitor was always 25ms, even on their site some specs show it's 25ms, although some other comparison charts were already updated to 16ms.

Anyone knows anything about that ??

I wanted to buy this one, can even get a good price for it, but refrained because it was 25. Now that it's 16ms I might reconsider...

This is weird. Sent them a msg but still didn't get a reply.

Edit: I just noticed they upgraded the contrast level as well! Previously is was 1:600 and now it's 1:700. Brightness remains the same at 250cdm.

It is not wierd...it is them reacting to the insatiable and totally unfathomable demand for LCD's despite all their problems.

So many people want a "slim" display that they will settle for the current crappy state of technology so long as it can play games without ghosting or make their eyes bleed too bad whenever they run a screen in anything other then its native resolution.

Sorry, I don't get your point. LCDs might have problems, but that's not the issue here.

The subject in question is Viewsonic's update of a product specifications. I have never seen anything like that before.

Furthermore, the same product has the old specficiations on the European site!

I apologize moti...I started to rant and lost my meaning while doing so.

What I am afraid is happening is that people are wanting fast response times...that is what almost anyone that plays games is hunting for, with the 16ms being the entry point to decent performance for a gaming LCD.

Thus if VS is seeing this trend, and is wanting to cash in on it, they simply change the way they measure the response time (read the sticky article about LCD's in this forum, it is VERY eye opening) and viola...you have a faster LCD!

I noticed the same thing on their website. I was considering purchasing this also. Lately, there seems to be a lot of errors on manuf. website. I'm pretty sure its an error. The review on pcworld as well as the european site show 25ms. I'm pretty sure it is 25, NOT 16.

Also, look at the CR. They are stating 170/170 (V/H) CR>10. No tn panels can actually achieve that. The vp191 is probably a pva matrix.

Well, I got a reply from VS's customer support.
They confirmed the monitor is 16ms since they replaced the panel!

Here is the reply:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for contacting ViewSonic Technical Support.

The hardware in the VP191b has been upgraded to a 16ms response time and 700:1
contrast ratio. I do not have the reasons for this upgrade but it is unlikely anyone
will find grievance with it. Any websites showing the older spec either have not
updated their information or are still carrying older production units. All VP191bs
manufactured from this month on will comply with the new specifications. The same panel
type is still being used and all other hardware remains the same which is why the
model name has not changed. It still supports a refresh rate of 50-85Hz, although
60Hz is the optimal setting at all times.

ViewSonic Technical Support

I am going to be a proud owner of a new VP191b very soon !

Even the 8ms Benq has a true average response time of 20ms for all color transistions. You'd think they'd market it this way? No, they quote its theoretical fastest response time which occurs in less than 10% of cases. Is this good marketing? Absolutely. Is this good for the customer that doesn't know any better than to accept its rated ms as an exact number and believes they are buying an LCD capable of displaying 125fps without blur? Not at all.

Yep, sure you're right.
Nevertheless, a 16ms typical refresh rate panel would be probably have a better refresh curve than a 25ms one. Not always, but usually that's the case.

Also, the benq 8ms proved to be always <20ms, which still made it the fastest one around.

I also emailed viewsonic and got a similar response (viewsonic canada)

(Question) Hello. What is the pixel response time of your vp191b/s lcd monitor? The viewsonic.com website says 16 ms, but then you go onto say: ClearMotiv
technology Super-fast 16ms video response for broadcast-quality full motion video at 40
fps. 40fps should be for 25ms panels. 16ms should give 62.5 fps. Furthermore, the
viewsonic europe site, as well as reviews on the net such as
http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/chart_test_report/0,prodid,17649,00.asp
mention 25ms. Which is it? tks

(answer) Dear Valued Customer,
Thank you for contacting ViewSonic Technical Support.
the current response time for vp191b/s is 16ms, they probably did not update
all the information, since the previous version was about 25 ms

(question) I'm assuming then that the panel was changed? When was this change made? I'm interested ordering one, but I don't want to get teh 25ms version. Tks

(Answer) Dear Valued Customer,
Thank you for contacting ViewSonic Technical Support.
the change was in the las quarter of this year, so it is hard to say which of them are in the 25ms or which are not in the 16ms

I've emailed them again to ask how to verify which model is 16ms and here is their informative response:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The serial number prefix in North America is A1W for the VP191b. It will likely be
different for your area, though. The following four numbers will indicate the time
of manufacture. For instance, a serial number of A1W044938742 means it was
manufactured in Week 49 of Year '04, or the first week of December 2004. All units
manufactured with a serial number prefix of A1W0449 or higher should contain the new
specification.

I really must praise the ViewSonic support. They replied my emails very quickly and very informatively.

My only concern now is that maybe they really changed the panel into some other technology. From all the monitors I've seen in the past, the VP191b was the best for me. I don't like shining monitors that boast 400cdm brightness but let you feel like you're starting at the sun. The VP191b was very soft and easy on the eyes.

Will have to watch the new one in action before buying it, but most chances are that this is my next monitor! :)

Cheers!

I asked the same question, but didn't get a reply yet. However, my other 2 emails were answered in under 5 mins :D Considering the answers I got, I suspect the contrast ratio is wrong since it hasn't been "updated" yet. I believe they also changed panel types. It must be a Tn. I"ve never heard of an IPS lcd from viewsonic. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find any reviews of the vp191 with the 16ms. The ones I do find are all of the 25ms one (which don't help since the panel probably changed).

If that reply is true, only monitors manufactured in the last 4 weeks of this year will be 16ms. Since today is the 12th, that means you would need to get an lcd manuf. this past week. That may be a problem. I'm sure viewsonic will be unloading all the old vp191's for a while to come. It may be very difficult to find a 16ms panel.

Great... Here's the answer I just got from viewsonic:

(question) Would I be able to tell by the serial number, manufacturing date or revision
#? tks

(answer)

Thank you for contacting ViewSonic Technical Support.

To be honest I do not believe this reply.
I am not sure which VS office told you that, but I got my replies from their main HQ. I have never heard of 16ms in the VP191b before, this is something brand new, and the HQ reply confirms it.

I got my replies from

I originally emailed the viewsonic canada tech support though.

I dont know what to think anymore... The only way to know for sure would be to buy one and look at it. The only problem is, how could you tell if its really 16ms? Depends what type of panel too. If its a 16ms PVA, it'll ghost just as bad.

The Benq 8ms has a true average response of 20ms...For this to be an average, it needs to be weighted with either a smaller amount of pixel transistions taking an exceptionally longer time to change, or a larger amount of pixel transistions taking a smaller amount of time to change beyond the average. In this LCD's case, it took up to 24ms about half the time. However, these ratings are still the fastest of any LCD out there, as other slower displays might have a maximum a lot higher than that, and many people will not be able to notice blur on this screen at its speeds.

The VP191b is certainly not that fast, but still a rather fast display, and since some lucky people haven't noticed ghosting on 25ms displays even, this upgrade is a good thing. I'm going to wait for LED backlit displays before I add them to my 2141sb
