I'm debating on purchasing a 2nd LCD monitor as my main gaming and graphics design monitor to pair with my Dell 19" Ultrasharp.

I can get a good deal on these 2 viewsonic monitors:
VX924, 19" Extreme Gamer 4ms LCD Black-Silver 1280x1024 OptiSync TCO'99 - $333
and the
VX922, 19" Extreme Gamer 2ms LCD Black/Silver 1280x1024 OptiSync TCO'99 - $379

I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience with these, or if anyone has heard anything. Any setbacks of going with Viewsonic. Warrenty, or anything else?

well, i'm a viewsonic partner, so i'm not going to be terribly unbiased in my opinion. that being said, the VX922 is a promising panel and the VX924 is a decent one also.
warranty-wise, if you buy from a good dealer, you shouldn't have to worry...Viewsonic is a top-notch supporter of their products. never had any complaints from my end.

vx924 isn't truely as fast as viewsonic claims it is the vp930b does alot better imo and the 922 is a 6bit panel if I am not mistaken. To me they are not worth it.

What's the difference between 6bit and other bits? What's a good bit?

6bit panels aren't capable of displaying as many colors as an 8bit panel (your two choices for "bits").

6bit (TN panels, like the ones you listed) are 16.2 million with a lower latency

8bit (mva, ips, etc) are 16.7 million with a slightly higher latency

the disadvantage tothose .5 million colors is that they have to "emulate" the differences and you often see this with banding or dithering - it's an uneven transition in color gradients that to me is pretty distracting though in fast paced games you're not likely to notice it.

i'd go with the viewsonic vp930b. it's reviewed as one of the best multi-use panels as well as it being an MVA (8bit) panel. you'll give up a little speed, but you'll get better color. the reports on backlight bleeding seem to be 50/50 - i'd like to see one in person.

I see. So I'd probably want to look into another series of LCD monitors that can perform the same as well as be cheaper?

in the research i've done i've found that the vp930b is one of the best priced/performance for what i've heard the lcd is capable of. there's a more expensive panel from NEC that's supposed to rock but what i'd really suggest is that you go check out the vx924 in person at a local store (like compusa, for example) - if you like what you see go with that, and if you get banding/dithering and it annoys you return it for another panel. there's a lot of useres on here that go with 6bit panels (940b from samsung for example) and they don't seem to find the lack of that .5 million colors an issue. 6bit panels based on the TN tech are usually quite cheaper. if i had the money and wasn't buying the fw900 (new development) then i'd go for the samsung 970p - it's an ips panel (i think, don't hate me if i'm wrong) but it's supposedly got godly black levels, and no ghosting - plus being an 8bit panel its got some great colors.

I think I might go with the Hyundai B90A since it is 8bit and it's 8ms at $319
Maybe even the L90D

there were a lot of reports about some lines appearing on the l90d+ BUT i've heard they've got that worked out and fixed on models now shipping - so i don't think you'd have to worry there. i've also heard that it's one, if not the best, performer for you dollar (as far as 6bit panels go, which it is). based on what i've read about it i can recommend it to you (mind you that i've not seen one in person) but if you check out newegg and see that it's got TONS of positive reviews i think you'd be pleased. : )

I have a VP201s, and have ordered a second one. I'm very happy with them, and I also have a ViewSonic 19" CRT that I use for secondary reasons.

The difference is a little more extreme than a half million colors. 2^6 (red) x 2^6 (green) x 2^6 (blue) is somewhere around 262,000 colors. All the other 15.9 million colors must be emulated. This means that even with emulation, you're not going to get .5 million colors.

I also wouldn't be distracted by the response times. The vx924 uses a TN panel, in which the lowest response time is 4 ms. However, the average response is probably around 20-30 ms, and the highest response times are ridiculous. The vp930b has a more even response curve, meaning the lows are not particularly low, but the highs aren't very high as well.

I thought the L90D is an 8 bit since it has 16.7 million colors
The manufacturer/reseller is lying. This happens often. Always be wary of colors on spec sheets.

Yeah I could have sworn a 6bit panel only showed like 256k colors and then the rest were emulated.

Use your Dell 19" Ultra Sharp for you Graphic Design because the Dell Ultra Sharp has excellent image quality and text. I would say buy the vx922 because its the best monitor you can buy for gaming but I'm not sure if you want a dual display because i would reccomend a monitor with a slimmer bezel (vp930b) or something else..

Well, the Dell ultrasharp actually distorts colors when using photoshop strangely. everything that is black looks brown. Everything sort of gets a brown tint. Whereas viewing regular pictures, it works absolutely fine. No distortions. So I'm not sure what's up there.

You might need to calibrate photoshop. Also be wary of listening to everyone suggesting the vx series of viewsonic monitors.

I'm kinda leaning away at the moment. It's nice it has such a high response time, but the fact that it isn't as high of a color range, as well as no vertical adjustments makes it lower on my list. Seeing as that my Ultrasharp can be vertically adjusted, I'd like to match it with a better monitor.

Its amazing how much people rely on THG and base their ideas from a chart, that in some cases isn't absolutely correct.

I have a viewsonic vx series monitor, a dell 1905fp, and a vp930b. The color difference between the vx and the vp930b was not dramatic. The vp930b colors had a glowy feel with a higher luminance. But it was not a big deal. Out of all the monitors including my crt I liked the dell 1905fp the best because the text was EXCELLENT and it was teh easiest on my eyes. (Oh and by the way, I still saw color banding in both vp930b and dell 1905fp)

Back to the point a tn panel still produces, vibrant, colorful and stunning images and is perfectly suitable for the average/hardcore user/gamer.

Thats all based on your eyes and how you see it though.
