Generally this is a problem.

My videos play too bright, altering video settings doesn't help. I've done lots of screwing around with codecs. I really don't know what else to do.

What plays too bright:
Quicktime
Windows Media Player
Winamp
DiVX

What doesn't play too bright:
Any video that uses a flash format (like youtube, dailymotion etc. you know .flv format or whatever)

Is this a vid card issue? If so how do I fix?
Is this a software issue? What is the problem then?

Also, intro video to my games (for instance, the Sierra video in TimeShift) also play too bright (these are usually .bik files i think)

Any help will be appreciated.

Make sure you're adjusting the color settings for video playback, not your desktop color settings because the video playback setting is independent from your other settings. In the Nvidia control panel there's a tab on the left for Video & Television and under that you can adjust the colors for video playback.

Give that a whirl and see if it works. I've had the same issue as you before and it went away once I tweaked the video playback colors.

It worked, not in the way i would have liked it though because now my brightness is not at the default 50% but now at 0% but regardless it worked so I'm happy now.
