I appreciate your videocard reviews a lot. One suggestion though:

Many people don't upgrade from a X1900XT to a 7900GTX or 7950GX2. As far as many people are concerned, the comparisons are great but don't help much with a buying decision when you'd like to find out how your trusty old 6800GT or X850XT performs comparatively. It would be nice to show some benches (not too many) of 2 or 3 generations behind to see how much an upgrade would be worth it.

Thanks and keep it up!

I agree. I would really like to see some comprabale number with older cards, since often times people need to make the choice "keep my 6800GT or upgrade".

I agree, I would like to see comparisons to the various series of cards they have available.

IE.: If you're reviewing the 7950, compare to the 7900GTX, 7800GTX, X1900XTX, X850XT and 6800Ultra, or whatever floats your boat. And then a second page comparing the cards in SLI/CF.

It's just difficult picking what cards to compare it to. Maybe find out which cards are most in use during that period of time, and compare to those.

Of course, there's always Tom's VGA Charts, I just find it a bit irritating to have to find a review on a particular card from a particular brand, then go to Tom's and use the VGA chart to compare it to a reference card, blah blah.

actually - i read alot of threads on alot of forums of people who upgrade from say a 7900 GT to a 7900GTX

the good part of those reviews is it lets you know , mmmm, should i buy a GT or a GTX?

it would be nice to throw in a say 9800PRO or 9800XT and maybe a 5950FX Ultra or something......

You could always go back and look at older reviews of those cards. Many of the older reviews still have some of the same games used for the benchmarks.

Be that as it may, I would love to see how my 'old' GFX card performs on the same rig when compared to the new one, which answers the question: "How much more will I get for my USD 300/ 500/ 850", which is an important question to me.

However, I see the time constraints and the fact that you guys (H|OCP staff) are probably not earning enough cash to justify spending 40000 hours per week re-reviewing old hardware, just because I'd like you to.

well theoreticly, they when they do the CPU and mobo benchies, note the difference, then when they do a vid card review note the difference then make a synthitic claim e.g.

(numbers are totaly made up)
athlon xp 3000+ to amd64 3000+ w/x800 2% increase

amd64 3000+ to x2 4500+ 30% increase

ati x800 to x850 on amd64 3000+ 15% increase

amd64 3000+ amd64 3800+ w/x850 20% increase

and64 3800+ w/x850 amd64 3800+ w/x1600 25% increase

you now have a base to assume within 5% what your increase would be if you went from a x850 to a x1600 on a amd64 3000 about 35%, the more numbers you have the more accurate a prediction you can make about the older hardware. the numbers dont have to be proven every single time just weight it aginst older reviews you have done, you can even way in diminshing returns.... there becaomes a point where haveing a faster vid card wont help you any more... (trying to stick a x850xtpe in a p3 800 wont do you a lick of good) cut off points are obvious, no need to go lower than amd 64's with pci-e based cards ect.

something along the lines of " you would see about a 15% increase on x hardware vs x hardware"

thore
