***VideoCard GURUS*** ROME: Total War Pic *Help*

is ur vcard oc'd? maybe ur card is defective? did u just purchase this card? have u had it for a while?

no its not overclocked. it actually happend when i first got it now that i think about it. but i always thought it was driver related (options configuration related) and never thought that the card was defected.

so somethign like this would be due to the card itself?

make sure the fan on your vid card is still working I had the same problem before. My fan died and my vid kept overheating.

ok, so this happens with all of my games. i got a
amd 3200+
1 gig corsair ram
ati 9800 pro with all the latest drivers

my refresh rate was set at 85ish and 70 and still the same thing. nothing changes

Hi! Are you using the graphics card driver from ATI or from the manufacturer? I'm not sure about your mobo but some mobo driver also has AGP drivers available which may be the reason why you're getting those artifacts.

That problem is usually heat related or hardware related. Drivers general won't cause that particular problem.

I bet it happens only after you've played for a little bit (like 5 minutes or more)..

actually, now that i think about it, yah. for the first 5 mins or so its only maybelike 1 streak. then it gets reall bad. so does that mean i just need more fans?

ok. If it's hardware. Could you ask a friend to pop the card in his/her comp and observe if the artifacts are easily reproduced?

ok, so yall are saying it can only be HEAT or HARDWARE

so i put the fan for my room on an opened case, and it still does that, then it has to be
hardware maybe?
b/c i cant pop it out now and try someone elses cpu, but i can put a fan to it right now.

First- How old is the videocard
Second- Is it still under the manufacturer's warranty?
Third- If yes-then check out the manufacturer's website for an RMA form and/or procedures

I really doubt it's the heat. Unless you're in a desert or something (= We have a comp here w/ almost the same spec as yours and playing the same game and I've never seen those artifacts. I suggested to pop the card in your friend's comp so we could eliminate or verify that it is a hardware problem. On the other hand, if you could just return the card for a replacement w/ little inconvenience on your part, then by all means do (=

its possible the thermal goupe between the core and hsf doesn't cover enough area and thats the reason for his overheating, what brand of 9800 is it? built by ati or another brand?

Actually it still could be the heat if the HSF isn't making good contact with the core. Not sure how mechanically/technically inclined you are (the original poster), but I'd try to make sure the hsf is on and making good contact...or have someone that you know is good with that sort of thing check it. But I'd only do this if it's out of warranty. If it's still in warranty, you'd void it by removing the hsf...even if you put it right back on.

You're quite right. I was assuming that the card didn't have any sort of defects when it was bought (=

My 9600xt's hsf was outta whack when I bought it. I didn't feel like sending it back and waiting for RMA so I just fixed it myself. Then stuck a better hsf setup on it and o/c'd the crap out of it :D

I wasn't meaning to point out that you're wrong, just pointing out from personal experience with my ATI card.

ok, so the fan idea didnt work :D

the vid card is about 1 year old now. it is made by ati.
when i have time i will try popping the card into my brothers computer
and installing the game and test it out.

thanks a lot guys.

1 year only? u should be still under the warranty am i correcT? so rma it. rma'ing is sendin a defective card back to the manufacturer so they can repair or replace the card if neccesary for u. just put it in a static bag, in a box with lots of cushinning and send it off. i've never done a rma b4 but i've read about em. make sure u check to see if u need a rma number or anything b4 u send ur card. check ur card's site and read up on this.

yea rma usually takes 1-2 weeks..when i sent my motherboard i payed for them to get it overnight lol and they paid to send overnight also...Asus

Download RivaTuner. It tells you how hot your video card is running.

Open RivaTuner once it's installed, click on the small "Customize" button nearer to the top, then click on the button second from the right... look for "Core Temperature" and post what the temperature is.

If it's under 100 don't worry about it. If it's "Around" 100, that means your card is running pretty darn hot right now. Try to check the temperature after playing a 3d game for 10 minutes, then post the results.

As was I. However, I thought he had said he'd had it for a while... he's od noticed it immediately if that were true.
