Videocard fried? Why? How?

I'm a bit confused on why or how this card became fried.

I usually leave my PC on 24/7 and yesterday I left the house at 8am... Returned home around 9pm. Went to my PC and found it off... Booted it up and both of my LCD saying no signal found. I checked the wiring and realized the back 120x36mm fan wasn't spinning. And the XFX Gefroce 8800GTAlpha Dog fan was spinning slowly and noisily. So I tried to test the card but had no spare PCI-E and I only have an AGP card which my board don't support. So I brought it to local computer shop and he verified my suspicion that it went bad.

I bought this like 2 or 3 years ago and I feared the worst that XFX wouldn't honor it's life time warranty... I was wrong, they gave me an RMA number and I shipped it to them earlier today.

My question is why did this card fail when I didn't leave any game running that would the caqrd hot while I was gone? And isn't the system supposed to shut down if it starting to get too hot inside? And was the exhaust fan failing at same time a coincidence?
 
As I understand it, if the sensors on the motherboard and on the cpu sense they are getting too hot it should shut itself down, if it's enabled in the bios.

As far as I know no such protocol exists for video cards. I believe that was why the drivers that led to nvidia cards frying themselves was a big deal.

Your exhaust fan on your case may have been bad for a while and you never noticed. But as soon as the fan on your video card went bad you were in trouble.

I quit overclocking anything years ago. Everything been at stock speed ever since.

Guess I should start using software that monitor card temperature and possibly shut down the PC if it get too hot.

Damn bad luck.

Gonna be really bored next few weeks without my PC running. Tried playing EVE Online on a netbook..... IMPOSSIBLE even at lowest settings. :rolleyes:
 
You'll enjoy some better settings as I can guarantee you'll get an upgrade from the 8800GT
