My videocard was working fine Saturday when surfing the web or doing task that didn't put it under stress. When I tried to play L4D2 the game when start up but crash once I joined a game almost immediately. It did this about 3 times. Later in the night I tried it and it worked fine. Even today I played L4D2 and it was working fine. Just a few moments ago my computer kept freezing up on me and now I get red lines on the monitor. I almost want to say it's my videocard.

There are a few images to see what I'm talking about. I'm still on it now trying to get important files off it now before I shut it off till I get a new videocard. Okay here's my dilema. I plan on geting a new monitor to game at 1980x1080p or 1980x1200. There is that 5870 on Newegg for $200 AR. I been eying that for a while, but now I really need a card. So I was wondering if that would be a good card to get? My current card is a eVGA 9800GT (not the 4870 in sig b/c I gave that to my lil bro). I really don't want to spend more than $250. The 6950 looks awesome, but that's out of my budget. The XFX 6950 on Amazon was $301 just a few days ago and now it's $319. had it been $301 still I'd probably just got that, though it was more than I wanted to spend. Now I really don't want to consider it.

Oh yea, can anyone confirm this is my videocard?
 
Have you checked to see if the card is overheating?
Use MSI Afterburner to check your temps and see what your fan is doing.
Ive had this problem with a faulty PSU id check your +5 and 12 volt with a mutimeter..
 
I'll check temps now. I know yesterday at idle it was around 74C. Thing was HOT! Tried the MSI Afterburner and it won't pull up temps for GPU. Even tried Speedfan and it isn't showing the GPU temps either, though it was yesterday.

My PSU is a CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX. Recently purchased it maybe 2-3 months ago. I'll update sig, lol. CPU temps seem fine at 30C

Wow that is HOT..Id uninstall your vid card drivers and clean them out in safe mode and reinstall..
 
Yeah, that's way too hot for idle. If it's not dying already, it will soon due to the high heat shortening its lifespan.
 
So do you guys think that 5870 is a good replacement? I only gave my XFX 4870 1gb to my little brother because the 9800GT wouldn't work in his PC, but worked fine in mine for about 4 months till now. Pretty much anything I buy will definitely be an improvement over the 9800GT, but would like to be an improvement from the 4870 b/c I experience that already. A friend offered me his eVGA GTX 260 for $100 yesterday when I told him what was going on, but not sure if I want that.

If you want AMD 5850 on up would be a big improvement over the 9800GT..

If you don't want to spend much money try reapplying the thermal paste and see if you can lower that idle temperature.

Good idea. I have some AS5 here that I can try that. Probably will be tomorrow night though because I won't have time for that tonight. If that doesn't work then a new video card will be ordered!

I haven't done this since I had a 8800 GTX. It idled at a very high temperature and re-applying the TIM fixed the problem. Be careful to use the right stuff. Good luck.

Isn't AS5 conductive and not supposed to be used on GPUs?
Its been so long since I used that stuff I forget..
 
Hmm, not sure. I'll read up on it before I apply new thermal paste. If I have to order something else I will.
 
I have an acer netbook that does this after it sleeps when the battery is low. it sleeps for X amount of time then automatically powers off. after i turn it back on it artifacts like crazy until i remove the battery..

I thought the same thing too. It's been so long, but IIRC I think you want to ceramic, not AS5.
 
that videocard is most likely toast once you get those lines either the memory or the chip is fried. The heat sinks on the memory may have come lose. Good luck with it any way, and good excuse to move to a faster card.
 
I haven't had time to try to apply new thermal paste, but I'm pretty much accepted the card is toast. I went ahead and ordered the sapphire 5870... along with a few other goodies. (new case, case fans and filters, 120gb ssd, and 16gb flash drive) :D


Only thing I need to buy now is a new monitor.
 
I had vid cards do that twice and both times they were borked beyond fixing.

likely a good call to order a new one.
 
I didn't see this mentioned at all...is the fan and HSF free of dust and debris?

lol i was going to say the same thing. thats just pathetic it took 20 posts for some one to even suggest this. and who the heck suggested reinstalling the nvidia drivers due to high temps? what the heck would that do? nothing.


like ace said clean the heatsink. at worst you might need to remount the heatsink. otherwise if you plan to replace it anyways try baking it and seeing if you can cure the problem until you get a new card. those are your best opinions right now. at the least you will have a working backup card if one of these options works.

It was free of dust. I had taken it out and dusted it. Even when I did dust it the card barely had any. This car ran hot from day 1, but as of the past few weeks it seems to have gotten worse.

Pop the HSF off and replace the tim as others have said. There is a whole thread here somewhere on some cards having terrible factory tim applications.
 
why dont you rma it? It is an evga they have a lifetime warranty. You have purchased a new card but get it or what ever diff gpu they might offer in inplace and keep it as a back up.

First off I didn't say driver cleaning would fix over heating,I first said SEE WHAT THE FAN IS DOING..Why don't you read the whole fricken post before you jump on someone.
 
It was definitely the video card. I installed the new Sapphire 5870 and computer is working fine. The new SSD is nice too. :D

I decided to not mess with the card and do the RMA with evga as suggested. I didn't know it had lifetime warranty. I already started the RMA process. I rather do this before messing with the card in hopes of getting it replaced or just have them fix it. if I mess with it and then try to do an RMA process they will probably void the warranty because of me messing with the card before hand.

My 8800 GTS did the same thing, couldn't clear it and kept getting worse. It always ran pretty hot, even in a well vented case. I managed a little over 3-1/2 years of use. I then bought a used ZOTAC 9800 GT to tide me over until my new build with a GTX460.
