I got home to my PC tonight and I found my monitor blank, not a good sign. I go through all the checks and find it's my videocard that's giving me troubles, since onboard video works fine but I'm getting nothing from my 9600 Pro.

I go to investigate and as soon as I touch the capacitors on the card I jolt back before they can burn my finger. These things were incredibly seering hot. This card has worked fine for a month with the same airflow conditions and I have no idea why the capacitors would just fry right now. I pulled the card out, check the heatsinks airflow, and let everything cool off. As soon as I put it back in and fired her up, the capacitors were flaming hot again in only a few seconds.

Anyone have any idea what my card did to itself? The card was working 100% fine when I left but now suddenly my videocard's capacitors are mini-Chernobyls....

Any good idea's for a replacement? I'm impartial to nVidia or ATI, although ATI would be nice since I could reuse the same drivers.

My budget right now is $70 max, not a cent over because I've got to keep enough so that if colleges cash my app check it actually goes through. (Wouldn't really improve my shots at getting in if my check bounces). I'm going to buy new since I want a warranty and I have a new $300 tablet on the way, so a new card is needed immediately.
I want something that can at least play WoW, I don't play any other games, and my computer is mainly used for really intense Photoshop work.

I'm looking at a 128mb Radeon 9200 or so, any suggestions?

factory defected capacitor with a shorter than average lifespan ?

just a gues

You can just get another 9600Pro if it worked well enough for you. Newegg has a bunch of stuff at $70, I didnt look much but I noticed a retail 9600Pro for $68 with $3 3 day shipping or something.. Although, you did say not a cent over and thats an entire $1 before tax o.o but yeah, they also have a 9600XT refurb, but I dont know how neweggs refurbs work because I dont order from'em. 9600 Pro

I think I may step down to an FX5200, just so I can get the bare minimum in DX9 capabilities.

BTW Anyone interested in a partially dead 9600 Pro with an Arctic Silencer and RAMsinks on it?

Do you already own the 5200?

If you plan on buying one, don't. Get a 6200.

FX 5200 are worthless they can TRY to play games a couple years old i had one and it was worthless with anything graphically intence

yeah, my 5200 was one of the worts experiences I ever went through, untill i got me 6800 I thought 512X384 was a perfectly respectable resolution to run UT2k3 at.

While I wouldn't say WORTHLESS, I would say bad for anything newer than... '02. As you can see in my sig, I have an FX5200, and I can play WoW pretty decently. But, I'm into games so this PC is going to get a 6800 (Gt?) if I can find a good cheap one that's AGP. Then it's time to start the case for... conroe . As far as your card is concerned, get a multi-meter and start checking caps... it's possible one's just bad that you could replace. If it's not one of them, who knows... good luck either way.

i guess it will trudge threw older games but mine had trouble with the underground and underground 2 couldnt play halo on a good day could play moh breakthrew (my main lan game) It was a 128 mb version and almost seemed like a step back from my ati rage 128pro ultra (one of the hardest cards to find drivers for) 32mb. It was paired with an intel 2.66 and 512 ram. Maybe i just had high expectations for a 128mb card
