Videocard artifacts....overheating?

Hi guys, ive got a 128mb Sapphire Radeon 9600Pro, and have never had any problems with it..until now.

If recently started playing F.E.A.R, and it all starts out fine, but after a while flickery artifacts and tearing start appearing after about 15mins. and slowly get worse and worse until i can see thru walls etc and it becomes unplayable. Then i quit, and go back into it later and its fine for a while, but then the same thing happens.

Today i installed X3, and instead of the flickering artifacts and tearing, it has this kind of swirly burn-in type of thing happening. Its like a full screen graphical distortion, liuke you seen on Airport monitors that have been burnt in or something. It appears the same on every screen in the game, but is perfectly fine when i quit, and doesnt appear in other games.

My card isnt overclocked, and is therefore running at stock voltages. Ive opened up the case while playing F.E.A.R and it is quite hot, but its fan is still running, and why would it suddenly start overheating now, especially if not OC'ed?


Has anyone got any ideas how to fix this, cos i like to play for more than 15mins at a time. hehe.

Have you cleaned the heatsink of any dust? Dust is a good insulator and really blocks the fans air flow. Try gaming with a box fan or something similar pointed at the card while playing and see if the problem continues. If the problem doesn't go away RMA the card. If that isn't an option pick up a Zalman VF700 Cu HSF for the card and see what happens.
 
maybe put a little money into your graphics card if you're going to be playing fear?

Definitely get something faster than a 9600pro (at least an X700pro or better). IMO, it's not even worth the money or effort to repair your current card if you're going to be playing games like that.

That's not his problem... he wanted advice on how to proceed playing these games on his 9600pro, not whether or not he should upgrade it... and there's no saying that it needs to be repaired yet.

Anyway, has this only happened on your newer games? Are there any older games you can try this out on? It's too bad that the 9600 doesn't have a temperature probe on it, otherwise you could tell us those temps. Oh, and the settings you have selected for FEAR and X3 would be good to know too.
 
Okay heres an update...put a pedestal fan in front of the open case, blowing directly onto the V/c, Fear plays fine now, and im just about to test X3.

I took the card out and cleaned the fan, it was pretty dusty, but i think ive broken the fan now, ahha.


The thing about upgrading, is that this comp doesnt have any PCI-E slots. So itd be a bit of a waste of time buying a new AGP v/c, then having to upgrade it again when i get a new comp ,wouldnt it?





Edit: Okay, X3 test done, failed. Must be a non-heat related issue. Here is a screenshot.

 
*ahem* i meant he should put money into his video card by spending more than what a 9600 costs. Time for a new system if you're playing these sorts of games. You can get something decent for like 1000 dollars. Decent and upgradable, not great. Just check newegg for some socket 939 boards with pcie. Not sure what cpu you're running now, or memory, but i smell a new system in the works if you wanna enjoy some games.

Got any idea whats causing that image distortion on teh X3 screenshot?
 
Okay, well, i put a VF700-CU on the card (damn thats a chunky biatch)...works fine on fear now...thanks guys.

However im still stuck with the problem shown in the above X3 screenshot...any ideas?
