I was browsing around on youtube earlier and I was actually amazed at how they do it.

You can just upload a video and they will create a screenshot for it (on the fly i think). Anyone know what kind of underlying technology is involved?

I know PHP can manipulate images, but videos ... thats a whole other animal. What do I need to learn?
 
Perhaps they have outsourced it to a team in india who's only job is to take screenshots of uploaded videos and put them on the website.

That's what I'd do,anyway. :)
 
I think youtube actually uses a flash video server. Not sure about the screenshot part, but that's how they convert all videos to an flv video. I've seen other sites do automatic screenshots too and have been trying to figure that out.
 
It is Flash.

Flash player 7+ allows you great control of video. It simply takes only the first frame of each video and sends it as a JPG. When the video is selected, then the requests for the rest of the video is called.
 
Thanks .. looks like I need to get reacquainted with Flash. Been meaning to learn how to display 360 deg view of objects in Flash anyways. LOL.
