video quality issue

My current setup is primarily used for watching movies and t.v. shows (some on disc, some burned to hard drive) and the video always looks a bit poor. Even the blu-ray/HD DVDs I have don't look great and I've always assumed it's due to the connection. I currently use a 1080p t.v. for a monitor that has HDMI connections but my motherboard only has VGA so I've been using an adapter to connect the two. Is this the cause of the poor quality video or is it something else? Can I just get a new motherboard?

Thanks for your input. Sorry if this is in the wrong sub-forum.

edit - current motherboard

Thanks that's a good idea!

Now if I were going to build a new system, would the change in motherboard be sufficient or will a graphics card provide a better picture?
