My roomate has an emachine, (problem #1)
But anyway, seriously though here is what he told me, he did a fresh format of his HD today and reinstalled windows no problems up to this point, got everything up and running but never had his video card drivers installed and he was fucking around with it, (he doesn't know much about computers (Problem #2)

So anyway now the computer boots to the windows XP loading screen then after windows has loaded the monitor goes black, but it does boot properly into windows, and the monitor stays on and does not go into sleep mode?

You can't boot into safe mode either, can somebody help me diagnose this problem so I can fix it for him?
 
Could be broken display drivers or bad refresh rates/resolution or something...?
Did you try pressing F8 at the boot menu, and selecting VGA mode?
That may allow you to boot to a visible desktop, and then you can reinstall/reconfigure the display drivers.
If that doesn't work, I wouldn't know what else to do other than reinstalling Windows...
 
Yeah tried that aswell, same as trying to boot into windows no display =(, also tried a repair of system files off of the XP CD and no joy there either. The problem is he transfered all of his files back off his brothers computer before he fucked with his display, and now I don't want to reformat because he'll loose all his data.

What if I take his HD put it on slave and boot up. where there's an XP installation on his HD will it fuck with my comp? I just wanna save his data so he doesn't loose everything.

That should be fine... the HD will be mounted with a new driveletter, and will be ignored by the current Windows installation (unless you actually swap the HDs, and this one becomes the old one, and it tries to boot from this one, that'd be a problem).
Then you can just copy what you want, and reinstall Windows...
You wouldn't have to actually format the drive anyway... just deleting the Windows, Program Files and Documents and Settings dirs should be enough for a clean install.
In fact, I think there's an option to reinstall Windows into the same dir, and deleting the old install...
