Video/Pic Editing Rig ??

A buddy of mine would like to build a rig for around 1K for video capturing/editing and picture (photoshop) editing. I'm a gamer so i don't know much about what processors and video cards are best for this. If you could make a small list of components that are good for this, it would make deciding that much easier. Thanks in advance.

looks more than sufficient to me, only thing i would think about is larger HDD (if he is going to be a lot of editing as those files get large in a hurry)... also i'd go with the intel setup over the amd setup as things like premier and such tend to work better with the intel HT tech then with the 64bit processing of the AMD's... just my opinion based on waht i've read and seen (even though i prefer AMD to Intel for vitrually everything else)
 
stay away from AMD if you use adobe products. My computer hates Premiere. P4 is the way to go for what he needs

If he plans on keeping the computer for more then 2 years, i recommend going with the AMD64 set-up, so that way if he ever wants to switch over to the 64bit software, he can.

Everything else looks just fine. Im not sure if you would consider this, but for about 96$US more, you can spring for the ATI AIW radeon 9800Pro. I think it would be worth it if they will keep the PC for a while.

Lastly, more so then the graphic card is the importance of a good monitor for Digital content creation. If he is just going to be saving his home video's on his PC, and croping family pics from the 2.1MP digital camera, then fine.

But if he is going to be doing some serious graphic design, i recommend looking into a good CRT monitor. (sometimes people overlook the value of a good monitor). Not the ones for 1800$US, or 8600$US, but the NEC's or Sony CRT's. Should be less then 300$US. Ive had a 19" Sony trinitron for 4 years now, and it served me well :D
