Video Games Blamed For Shootings

<Steps up on the Soapbox> I think that using video games as an excuse for violence is wrong. I grew up playing all the same games as these kids, watching all the same movies as them... I dont run around shooting people. Actually real life violence makes want to throw up. They used to say the same thing about The atari and the first Doom when it came out, Where are all those kids that played those games now, they are the lawyers, the doctors, just average everyday people. Anyone that can't distinguish Reality from a Video Game, ALREADY has a mental condition and shouldn't be allowed in public.<Steps down off the soapbox>

It blows my mind, the amount of people who have no conscience, no work ethic, and attempt to cash in by suing hard working people.

When will people realize that suing a game company after the fact, is no substitute for proper parenting?

The people who point to video games as a cause for violent acts by children, have the mental capacity of a lemming and the sexual sophistication of a donkey.

If parents instill the proper values and morals in a child and do not sit them in front of the TV or game system, because they are to lazy to correctly parent a child, then there children will grow up just fine.

The finger should be pointed at the parents of the accused, instead of grasping at straws and trying to make money off of truly tragic events.

This attorney should be ashamed ... and I only wish I could be his conscience when it does in fact call.

If anyone is interested in contacting the attorney who is responsible for all this video game bashing ... his email is jackpeace@comcast.net.

I think we've gone over this debate time and time again, but the truth is that whoever is to blame, (the parents, the kids, the family, the video games, etc) our society allows for violent acts like this to exist.

Certainlly, children aren't born with an innate knowledge of how to shoot a gun or with the desire to go about killing innocent people. These ideas are taught to the child as he grows up through the media, movies, television, and a lack of proper parenting--that teaches the child the difference between right and wrong.

So, is sueing the video game company the solution? Certainly not. You cannot target a small example of violent entertainment like GTA and use it to make the argument that this was the reason for the cop killing. No, no.. the problem extends much deeper, beyond the game into all of American society. The portrayal and glorification of violence, without the ability to understand the differences between right and wrong, lead people to commit violent acts like this.

They gotta stop blaming video games/movies. As said before, its all in the parenting.

Blaming a video game is one thing, sueing them is another.

I had a former friend back in highschool who was quite violent and often physically attacked teachers and other students. one of his shrinks told him to avoid violent movies and videogames etc. wanna know what the ONLY game this guy played was? Ultima Online. yup 2D pixelation makes you wanna kill people... really im dressed in armour right now riding a dragon to your house to kick your ass.

video games are hrdly to blame for murder. you have to be fucked up first to do that. i will admit that a person with a serious mental illness or other outstanding problems might copy a videogame and kill someone but its hardly the games fault. the individual is the problem not the game.
welcome to democracy people if GTA3 the most selling game ever with god knows how many copies sold has one freak who screws it up the rest fall.... wait thats not democracy....well shit.

Glad i live in Canada

The finger should be pointed directly at the one who comitted the crime.

This "litigious" mentality is prevalent in our society (i.e suing fast food restaraunts for obesity and gun makers for crime). It shows that there is a complete lack on the part of many to accept any sort of personal responsibilty.

I just hope the courts start seeing these cases for what they are.... cash cows for the attorney's.

Yea, I remember that part in GTA where you grab the cop's gun in the police station and shoot them all up...

If it is indeed Jack Thompson representing the plaintifs, I can hardly say I am surprised. This guy has been involved in just about every "the video games made me do it" lawsuit. He doesn't give two shits about actually changing video games to be less violent, or stricter enforcment of selling to underage kids. He is simply trying to cash in off of it. This surprises me since he has yet to win a lawsuit over it. I'm guessing he doesn't have one of those "we only get paid if you win" clauses in his contract.

Anyways, courts almost always go the way of the free speech on subjects like these. You most likely won't hear of this again since mainstream media never does follow ups on cases thrown out.

Well, I just made this post in another thread...........

Personally, I find it to be a stress reliever to do 3D shooters online. Maybe that's just me, but at any given time there are almost 100,000 link people playing CS and CS:Source alone, so I suppose that would make a lot of violent people if it were true.

GTA is a game, it is not real. Real people make decisions in the real world. To blame a game for your behaviour is weak, plain and simple. Everyone in America these days wants to hire an attorney and blame someone else for their actions. Its just weak. Thank God the people on the "ZOLOFT" jury had a collective common sense. This will turn out the same way. Nice try.

I emailed jack with the post I made in this thread ... minus the lemming and donkey comment .... and the reply email was 2 words.

"bug off"

Thats it. But hey ... what do you expect from someone whos role model is Lenny from "Of Mice and Men"?

Just as eating poorly and not exercising can lead to obesity and smoking can highten the risk for cancer violence in the media has to be concedered a possible contributing factor. Do I think they should be sued, no, but I think we have to accept that fact that playing and watching violent games or movies has some effect on some people. Certianly, parenting is a key factor and the most important at that.

In a twist on an old saying: Video games do not kill people. People do.

You know, I read of some other place actually making some decent arguments and questions and sending them to good ol Jack Thompson and receiving the same type of reply. At first I thought is was BS as no legitimate attorney would say the stuff in the responses they posted, but after multiple accounts of the same thing it is hard to dispute. This guy nothing more than an ambulance chaser.

nothing i'm gonna say right now is gonna be any different than what's already been said.

it's all about the parents. where were the parents when the shooting happened? where were the parents when he got the gun? where were the parents when he got the game? where are his parents now? where's all the newsstories about kids killing kids for shoes? should jordan or nike be charged for that? video games have been on certain organizations' hitlist for a long time. why aren't they targeting movies, music, tv? hell, the movie "precent 18" or something, all they do is shoot cops, 'oh but they're "bad cops!"

Trials such as this one, or the "Zoloft murders" trial are continuing attempts by society and attorneys to absolve people of the responsibilites and consequences of their actions. Another example are the lawsuits filed against the tobacco companies by individuals suffering the health consequences of smoking. Phillip-Morris does not buy a pack of marlboro cigarettes, light the cigarette, put it in your mouth, and inhale for you. Neither does a video game or a prescription anti-depressant make you committ murder. People perform these actions, and the responsibility falls solely with them.

Do you ever notice that if something is negative, it is someone or something else's fault.

If you kill someone, you didn't do it, the video game made you, the zoloft told you to, the Ozzy song compelled you to, the latent repressed images of your childhood forced you to, the alcohol blurred your reasoning, the cops planted a bloody glove, Ronald McDonald forced your porky little kid to shove another big mac down their throat or Marilyn Manson put the loaded gun in your hand.

But if you do something good or positive, you did it all on your own. Ozzy wasnt there, the cops didnt set you up, Marilyn Manson wasnt there, your zoloft was in check, you had a soup and low carb diet water for lunch, your parents were great when you were younger and you only play sim city classic.

We have seriously become a country of victims of the dreaded "The Devil Made Me Do It" (With apologies to Flip Wilson).

Gawd forbid we take responsibility for our own actions, now that would be something to see.

So true, I totally agree with you on this. We have to take responsibility for our own actions.

You know this is as bad as when they were blaming heavy metal for kids commiting suicide.

It's a game not an excuse. The kid still had to make his own choice to commit murder. I mean really, what if the game he played all the time was Rayman or something would they still be blaming it on the computer company because of video game violence?

I mean I play Doom3 and Half Life 2 and I don't go out and beat people to death with a crowbar. This is stupid. He would have done the crime without the game, he had already made the choice to do it, he just took the idea from the game on how he wanted it done.

Lets just start hanging these greedy bastards! Good god, they've all but taken away recess at school for kids and adults dont' even get a real break from the life working to eat and pay taxes which in turns is used to figure out how to do even more tax's. They honestly expect everyone to keep their lid on straight when being pushed this far?

Hell no, now if you'll excuse me the rifle is needing polishing :D

Why is it that people are so quick to sue video games, because they trained the children to murder, kill, etc...

Yet no one ever sues the military when one of there soldiers commits murder, outside of combat ?

If Jacks logic is to be followed thorugh with, the military would have dozens of lawsuits on its hands, after all, didn't they teach how to fire a gun?, how to use a knife?, etc ...

The military does not get sued because people realize it is not the training that commits the murder .... its the person.

Yet somehow this does not apply to video games ?

LOL

I just got another responce from Jack. Didn't even send a second email. He must have thought this comment was like the "jerk store" and sent this to me in a vein attempt at a burn.

This was his responce.

"I'll realize all this when you grow up and get off the games."

Yeah, man.. It's all the fault of video games! We were living in a totally nonviolent Utopia until Pong came along, then WHAMMO!

</sarcasm>

Crazy people are going to be crazy regardless of the times. This kid should have been in a mental hospital. This is a result of too much of the "we can help everybody" bull that goes on in schools today. I am sure he showed signs of his crazyness far before he killed 3 people.

No way, people kill...it's part of our nature. To blame it on anything but nature or up parental upbringing is lunacy.

lmao those fools could have watched a movie and still have gotten the same idea about killing those officers. Infact they could have read an article about killing and gotten an idea. Them blaming videogames is just some lame excuse that the government and generally conservative people throw out there because they do not want to admit that the problem was the kids. If your kids are loners, loser, and always seem depressed THEN SOMETHING IS WRONG PEOPLE!

What a load of crap. I've played violent video games for many years, and I have zero issues with violence, of all things. The issue is the parents and the stores, not the game. It is the responsibility of the parents to let their kids play certain games and the responsibility of the stores not to sell stuff to people underage. Period. Every time some mental fucktard who plays video games goes apeshit and kills somebody, guess who gets blamed... Thank god video games are constitutionally protected and im over 18 :D

For the fellow doing a report, please note in your presentation that games are protected under the constitution, and that it is not games that are the problem, but those that use them and their/their parents ignorance. Also look for popular criticisms of the so-called "studies" that opponents cite as evidence that games cause violent behavior, as well as mention that every body is focusing on the bad apples, as usual.

Finally, I think that the thing with the tobacco company suit is that they did not warn consumers that there were health risks, even though they knew about them.

I guess I'm a perfect example...

From the time I was 5, I've been watching some of the most violent, bloody, meaningless movies, games, etc...

I had seen the first 5 Friday the 13th's by this time....saw the 6th in the theater (yes...I'm old)..Nightmare on Elm Street...SleepAway Camp, etc...and here I am...years later...still killin aliens, demons, zombies, eating during the most gory scenes of a movie, yet, I haven't killed, maimed, etc anyone because of it.

It's all about the person, that person's mental stability, and the parental influence. If you can't realize this yet (referring to lawyers who would consider a case like this), then you need to wake the f**k up. It only takes a little bit of gd common sense to judge what is wrong and what is right.

It doesn't matter if they picked up the habits from movies, tv or games. They still killed 3 people. Automatically goto Jail, not point the finger at someone else for conditioning you and get off with a slap on the wrist.

IMHO, if you let young children play games such as Doom 3/HL2, not only are you an idiot as a parent, but you should be charged with child neglect. There's no need for such a young person to be exposed to bloody video game violence at a young age. And anyone who says, "Well we played those games as kids", you need a reality check. The games today are so much more detailed and visually compelling than anything we ever played as kids. Personally I don't allow my 7 year old or twin 5 year old boys to play any bloody/violent games. That's my own choice though.

As far as adults go, entirely different story. We know the difference between right and wrong; atleast those of us with even half a brain do. I'm no more likely to go on a killing spree then a U.S postal worker is by playing Doom 3/HL2 or any other violent video game. People "snap" for different reasons. I think if you've been given a "decent" upbringing by loving parent(s), you appreciate all life and what it's worth. Also, to use games as a scapegoat is just an excuse or attempt by a lawyer to deflect guilt away from his/her client. It's nothing new and it'll continue in the future.

OMG...YOU ARE PARENTING. STOP IT RIGHT NOW. You need to get on the bandwagon and start blaming others. It is the American way.

P.S. Thanks for actually parenting your children.

I couldnt agree more with this logic. BUT, cigarettes, alcohol, video games, automobiles, guns, and heavy machinery ALL come with warnings and have been impressed on people for decades of their inherent dangers. People HAVE to begin to think and take responsibility for their OWN decisions. When they are little it IS the responsibility of the parents to guide them, counsel them and help them understand reality. BUT it isnt rocket science to understand the basic rules of society, if you harm someone by your actions YOU are responsible. Not the game, gun, cigarette or auto.
I am NOT an NRA person, this was not written to defend any of the above or start some argument about the attributes of or control of any of the above. Just an opinion. :D

This is just the by-product of societies attitude that it's not your fault that this happened, it is someone elses. The problem today is the lack of parenting as has been said through this thread. Unfortunately people lead increasingly busier and busier lives, so its increasingly harder to monitor your kids and what they watch, who they hang out with, etc etc. That is to say that it is still not an excuse to not instill good moral values in the children when they are young. Unfortunately today, society as a whole no longer facilitates such values anymore.

Thompson is accused of killing the three men in June 2003 after being brought to the Fayette police station on suspicion of driving a stolen car. Thompson allegedly grabbed one of the officer's guns, shot him and the other two, then fled in a patrol car.

Did it occur to them that maybe he killed them to avoid jail?

That's only partly true. Canada has dramatically less violent crime per capita than America. It is a safer place to live. Canada sees itself as part of the world, where we are but one co-equal part of the whole, and where we think working with people is the best way for us all to be happy long term. This, sadly, is not the same attitude as America.

Sad but true. I know parents who actually put money before their children. I feel so sorry for the kids. The children basically run rampant and have absolutely no respect for anyone, including their parents.

Its true we have less crime. But around where I live, In Toronto, it has been bad lately. I think crime, and violent crime, is directly related to the degradation of society which in turn leads to the inability, of parents, to correctly instil basic morals and values in their children.

That's why I think all lawyers are a-holes...

They might as well sue the movie companies next...
