Video freezes pc??

hi everytime a video file initiates my operating system seems to freeze??
it just comes to a complete halt and there is nothing i can do about it!
i just upgraded my ram and mobo, did a clean install of xp pro and this problem has started happening.
i.e.
had to do a clean reinstall of wc3 and now i can't play it since it always try to play the video in the beginning, which would bring my system to a halt.

i can play games fine(which dont have any video clips), i can run sandra, loop 3dmark but as soon as i try to play a video it halts.

my system is mem test/p95 and eveyrthing stable and not overclocked at all
i currently have settings at 166x11
ram is at 2,3,3,6
1.7 vcore (undervolts to around 1.66)
2.6 ram

are their any special jumpers i have to move on my abit?
or should it pretty much be plug and play?

any input appreciated
 
Ok, possible problems:

Power supply, post the ratings of the +12v rail. I need the amperage.

Try running driver cleaner/cab cleaner. Reinstall cat's.

The only thing you changed compared to your previous system are the mainboard and RAM? All other components were taken from the old system?

and all still work in the asus, i tried last night with no video problems?

is there a jumper i have to move around on the nf7-s mobo?
i left everything untouched on the abit board

more sys specs, im using a special edition 80 gig hdd and not using the sata adapter they give you.
i would also like to rid myself of the sata screen that immediately follows the post but cant seem to find a jumper for it in the manual for the life of me!

one thing i do remember is softmodding the card using omegas drivers before i switched mobos
but a clean format of the os, before the fresh install of xp should cure that right?

You should be able to disable the SATA adapter in the BIOS (integrated peripherals).

Anyway, subtle problems like this one (system freezes whenever playing video) are often caused by one or more small issues, which are hard to track down.

My suggestion would be to strip this system down to its essentials (mainboard, CPU, RAM, videocard, one IDE HDD (not connected to any kind of RAID adapter or such), one optical drive). First focus on trying to get this configuration stable. Run Memtest86+ and the manufacturer's HDD utilities to ensure that the RAM (and CPU) and HDD are fine. Change the memory settings to less agressive ones. Try a different PSU. Try different RAM. Flash the BIOS. Etc.

Only once you've made this configuration stable can you start adding parts to it, one at a time, every time ensuring that the system is stable.

To answer your other questions, you shouldn't have to move any jumpers in other to cure such a specific problem (aside from resetting the CMOS). Softmodding is done only in the drivers, so no permanent changes to the card are made. Try a different videocard if you want to be certain that it's not the videocard that's the culprit.

ok i finally got around to messing with this pc today and found out the video card is the culprit?

plugged in a geforce card and then tried another radeon later, only to confirm that video clips play fine on them!

plugged back in the 9500 and it freezes as soon as a "video" is introduced.

The video card has its own power line and no optical devices share the line with it.
The only thing i can remember doin to the video card is blowing the heatsink and fan with my breath to get rid of some dust in the heatsink.

im tootally lost here, any help appreciated


i can loop 3dmark 2003,2001, aquamark with the radeon and games play fine btw
(100 fps in cs, no slowdowns in wc3 during big battles)
 
I would think it is some sort of driver issue. Maybe uninstall your driver, use a driver cleaner, and then install the latest Radeon drivers. Or you can always format and install XP from scratch!

i did notice something however
my radeon 9500 defaults to 275/270

after reinstalling windows twice, i had to reinstall riva tuner twice.
when i enable low level overclocking, there is an exclamation point on the core speeds!!
the exclamation points go away after i bump the core and memory pass 300?
weird as hell if you ask me, and the card can do 330++/310 so the speed is not an issue

please tell me more on this driver cleaner, i googled driver cleaner and found nothin but complicated lookin shit.
it definetely must be a driver issue since all games and everything else runs fine
 
Try a google search for "radeon driver cleaner" and there are a few hits. I am not an expert on it, so I don't know which to try.

I use Rage3D tweak v3.9b to overclock my card, so I don't know whats up with Riva Tuner.

A couple questions...

1. Have you ever flashed the video cards bios?

2. Which types of movies play and which don't play? (Do a search for AVIcodec for a free program that can analyze .mpg and .avi and tell you what format they are)
 
never flashed the bios....i have a heard enough time flashing reg bios with floppies.

avi/mpeg/dvd/streamin movies/video clips in video games....man this shit is frustrating as hell, imagine your computer with no video and no porn.. :eek:
 
Hmm... Try this:

1. Right click on an empty spot on your desktop and select "properties"
2. Click on the "settings" tab
3. Click on the "advanced" button
4. click on the "troubleshoot" tab
5. try different settings there and see what results you get.

Heh, sounds like your video card is defective. Call ATI or whoever made the card and see what they can do. :(
