I just got my first digital video camera. It's a Panasonic PV-GS120 mini-dv cam. The bundled software is really really bad, and Windows Movie Maker is more like a childs toy.

What are some good editing packages to look at purchasing? As this is a hobby for personal use, I cannot put out for an uber-expensive professional package.... However, I know that good software usually isn't free/cheap. So what should I look at buying?

Premiere pro is pretty good, but its a few hundred dollars. The light version Premier Pro Elements, recently came out, and its only $100. I dunno how good it is...

in the opensource\GNU Catagory (free)
Cinelerra for Linux

might just be worth actually making the change
especially if your in the 64bit camp say employing Suse 9.1 Pro
with lots of RAM, that is the big gun several more user friendly Linux options are listed
in the event your not making a feature film :p

Cinelerra is not for consumer use. If ease of use, simplicity, and convenience, or stylishness are your thing, you should use Virtualdub, Kino, MJPEG tools or MainActor instead.
