Morning.

I'm looking for a laptop specifically for video editing - and its on a tight budget ( £699 - $900 USD).
I know ideally i'd have a dual core p4 with HT, but not possible.
Looking at low cost laptops specifically the p4 @ 3.0Ghz without HT and P-M 740 ( 1.73 GHz @ 533FSB) seem about equal in price.

It needs to be a laptop due to space issues.

What would you recommend going for, and why?

Thanks in advance,

afaik there isn't a p4 or p4 mobile 3ghz without HT.
but if it means something.. i ran a few tests with p4 3ghz @ 3.45ghz, fsb 230 and pentium M 1.6@ 2-4ghz, fsb 200, both with ram at 2-2-2-5 on asus p4c800e-deluxe mobo.
whereas p-m was much better at games, a little better in steinberg nuendo (audio editing), it was worse in video encoding. i captured realtime to 720x576 3Mbps divx 5.2.1, deintarlace on, with P4 load was 40% and with p M load was 70%.
sp, for specifically video editing, p4 seems to be the way to go.
just make sure you'll get a fast hard drive.. 3.5" would be better, but that's going to be a huge laptop then.. 5400rpm hdd's will hold you down for sure and 2.5" 7200rpm drives are better but not as good as 3.5" ones..

Thanks for those quick benchmarks - it's pretty much what i was expecting. I don't think i'll be o'cing this lappie too much though!

It would appear that many laptops with a 3GHz processor aren't using HT - Acer, dell, hp etc don't promote the HT side of laptops with this speed at all.

The 2.5" drives is a bummer, i know, but it's all about compromise.

Wolfsbane.

Northwood B, Northwood C, and Prescott
