I'd like to buy a computer for my dad so he can do his video and sound editing.

Please help me pick up a good video card or make any other suggestions, here is what I've decided on so far. Btw, there will be no games played on the computer so that's not a concern.

AMD dual core 2.0Ghz X2
MSI Neo4 Platinum
4Gb DDR Ram
300Gb WD Hard drive 8 Mg cache

For video editing, any videocard should be fine. I would find one with dual DVI's. What is your price range? For midrange, maybe a 6600GT. And high end a 7900GT...Maybe bump up your HD to 16meg cache.

You dont need that much RAM. 2 gig is more than enough.

Also, go with seperate OS and video drives, it's a must for video editing PC's.

Thanks for the great advice.

I've revised the single hard drive to two 300GB WD 16MB's and one os drive. The 4GB ram has been reduced to 2GB.

My pricerange for a video card is $400, cheaper the better.

Have any of you used an ATI AIW? I've been using their card for a while now on my own computers and have been comfortable with them. My dad's old computer used a pinnacle card and I've had nothing but headaches troubleshooting their software and hardware.

It looks like you're building a pretty hefty video editing computer... What type of video software is your dad running? Premiere, Avid, etc?

What type of camcorder is he using? If it's digital, you need a Firewire port on your computer. The motherboard has one. Forget the AIW card if you've got a digital camcorder. There's no point in getting that unless you need analog video inputs.

Like the previous posters said, the video card is less important in a machine like this. While a good video card will help rendering previews and effects... having more RAM and horsepower is better for a video editing machine like this.

exactly. OP, you're putting too much stress on the video card. since you're going with basic consumer products, you probably won't need to spend much more than 100 bucks. The AIW captures video from a live feed. If you're using digital, you wanna capture the video in digital form, so firewire is all you need.
