There's not any real way to describe this but to show you.

This is appearing on my screen for some unkown reason. A reboot generally fixes it but I'd still like to know what on earth causes it and what I can do about it. I'm worried it might be my videocard overheating (!)

AMD Athlon M @ 2.3 Ghz
Ati Radeon X800 Pro
512 RAM

Help!

dodgy driver installation, or most likely its your card overheating, check to see if the fan is working on the video card, if it is, reinstall your drivers, and make sure your monitor is connected securely to your pc.

If it still does it, and if you format and it does it even then, and your fan is working, then your card is damaged.

I agree - the card is overheating or it's damaged.

You say a reboot corrects it, but what causes it after the reboot? Do the artifacts appear after playing a game, or do they appear after some time?

Also, while you're in there checking the fan, reseat the card too.

It happens every so often, it begins when XP loads (not the black loading screen, the one just after).

Also, the artifacts are moving and respond to what is viewed. It seems like the memory in it is weird. Also, ALL of my videogames crash after a while, but it's VERY irregular. Is there a memcheck for video memory?

I don't think it's overheating, the temperature (as far as overdrive, which is off, is concerned) is pretty low. Is there a 3rd party temperature monitor program?

What can I do if the videocard is defective?
For an AGP slot, would you recommend another card, or just to wait until I do a big (mobo processor video) upgrade?

Speedfan might help with temp monitoring - it's a free download too.

Based on what you're saying, I would suggest that the card is bad. Is it under warrantee? If so, see if you can exchange or RMA it. Do you have another system that you can test the card on? Have you ruled out the chance that your monitor or monitor cable might be defective?

As for the system, that's up to you. If the machine runs fine and does what you need it to do, I would have no problem buying another AGP card. You can find some awesome deals on decent cards. But that all depends on what you use the system for :)

Hmm, I'm still not sure the card is defective, I've been running http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Benchmarks/Video-Card-Stability-Test.shtml for quite a while now with NO problems, although it does crash when using 3d Mark 06... I can't quite figure it out...

What stress testing process would you use to determine the exact source of RANDOM crashes involving most advanced 3d games, which isn't solved by a OS re-install, or using a different sound card?

Memory tests? Burn in tests? How do I know I should replace my x800? If I replace it, what should I replace it with? It's AGP, so should I just spend $1000 and upgrade to a new machine, or wait, or get a new AGP card and wait for the big upgrade (which might be possible since my processor rates equivilent to a AMD 64 3000+ (it's really an OCed AMD Barton M 2600+ running at 2.3 GHz))

Recommendations? Utilities?

Make sure you have fast writes disabled in BIOS. You most likely already do, but just checking. I had a similar problem with a crappy NF2 board, identical problem (including the artifacts "responding").

You're right! it's something straight out of the matrix... hmm, interesting...

Easy there Cypher... :)

Anywho, onto your problem. What does speed fan give you for GPU temps?

I will say that i get something like that every now and then when i first turn on my pc from cold, i turn on psu switch, i push power button on pc, and when the screen first shows before it starts to boot, and it is showing you the bios, i get that sometimes, and only on cold bootup, I think its something todo with nf4 boards, as its happened with 3 asus a8n sli deluxe boards, but as soon as i restart the pc, it works perfect, and it has did so for over a year, i never get that in windows, just the odd occasion when i first turn the pc on from cold.....

i think the prob at my end is the mobo isnt initializing properly, or something along those lines, or maybe even the psu, but its also the 3rd enermax 600watt noisetaker, so it has did it with all 3 mobos, all 3 psus, new sets of sli 78s, and new ram and also a 4400dc chip and a 4800dc chip, so it is unknow to me, so i just leave it now....
