video corruption after cooling mod

Hi! I have an ATI Radeon 9700. I had flashed it to a 9700 Pro and it has been running fine for a long time now with the stock cooling. I recently installed an ati silencer 1 by arctic cooling along with some arctic silver 5 thermal paste. After the installation I started the computer. It boots normally, but when it gets to the win xp login screen there are weird horizontal colors all over the screen (sometimes there are thick black and white horizontal lines) so I can't even logon. It can get into safe mode just fine. If I uninstall the video drivers and then restart the computer it runs fine in normal win xp. As soon as I install drivers and then restart it gives the weird colors at the normal login(safe mode is fine). I'm pretty sure the temperature is normal and the gpu contact is pretty good. I know the 9700's supposedly have a problem with the shim being higher than the core but I don't think thats much of a problem for me since the paste was able to get onto the heatsink part. Removing the shim is my last resort. Anybody know what could be causing this problem? Thanks in advance.
P.S. I tried ATI Catalyst 5.2 and Omega driver 5.1. It used to work fine with them before.

Well im not an expert or anything but

1. Did you give the paste time to set?
2. Is the Fan going?
 
hey oneos.
i gave it about a minute to set. do u think i should have waited longer? yeah the fan is working and the case is open for now. I'm using my backup card now so I'll give it a try sometime soon to see if the paste needed some time.

Well i dont really use pastes much, but ive read for it to work well, to let it set for atleast an hour? Some leave it for 72 hours.
 
I don't think you need to let it set up at all. I never have. I didn't see anything about letting it set up in the instructions :confused:
 
I forgot to mention that there is a little of the original ATI yellow paste left over on the card since it was pretty tough to get off. It touches the side of the core though, not on the core it self. A minute amount of the Arctic silver 5 gets on top of the left over yellow paste that is next to the core when I attach the heatsink to the core. Do you'll think that could cause a problem?

No, that shouldn't be a problem. And letting thermal paste usually helps improve performance as it fills in the gaps, but it should work just fine from the very beginning.

You say that it works in Safe Mode or without drivers, the only thing I can think of is that the card is having trouble in 3D mode- but Windows doesn't need 3D mode on its own. Could it be that some of the higher functions of the card took damage from removing the old HSF and paste?
 
Sounds to me like you chipped or cracked the core. How tight did you tighten down the silencer? Also was the original heatsink on with paste or ceramique?
 
It wasn't too tight. About two or three turns. The original came with thermal padding and creamique I think(it was yellow and hard so I had to scrape it off). There are a few very minor chips along the edge of the core. Wouldn't the card not work at all if the core was damaged?
P.S. The 9700's have cores that are under the shim so I think it would be hard to crack them.
 
I'd reccomend taking it off, and cleaning the GPU chip with some nail polish remover and a cotton ear bud. You should never put anything harder than liquid on the GPU! the nail polish remover will disolve all the left over heat transfer compound (not a good idea to mix the old with the new) and then you should start again. Put a thin layer on (too thick and it wont work properly), then do as you did, put on the cooler and away you go. I wouldn't be supprised if you've broken it though with the chips you talk about. If that doesn't work definantly remove the shim. be careful and you'll be fine.

I've tried using alcohol but the stuff used by ati doesn't loosen up. I have to heat it up with a hair dryer and then it gets a little softer. I'll try my best to take it all off. Anybody know how to check if the card is actually destroyed or maybe there's something I'm missing. Are there other options other then RMA'ing it to see if it still works?

it could be that, or that the new cooling mod is not getting enough contact...maybe due to the shim? are you sure it is getting enough contact? remove it and put the original heatsink back..
 
Seems like when I put on my AS rev3 on my 9800 Pro it said to remove the shim.
 
There is an incompatibility with the ati silencer 1 that is documented at the following website. http://www.ap0calypse.com/showthread.php?t=1265
If you look at the third picture under the 'installation woes' section, I have the same problem of the silver box touching the plastic. I still have good contact with the core though, in my opinion. Do you think that the plastic touching the box could be a problem?
By the way, at the win xp login, my monitor turns off for a few seconds and then turns on with the weird lines.
