I have two very similar systems, and am looking for the combo with the best 1080p gaming performance. I just got a $200 R9 290, so I can make some changes to the systems with the CPU's shown below. Currently, they both have a Radeon 7950 in them.

Assuming 16GB of memory for both (along with a 240GB SSD), which would perform better with current and future games?

Choose one from group A, and one from group B:

Group A (CPU)

i5-3570K @ 4,2GHz
FX-8350 @ 4.5GHz

Group B (Video Card)

Radeon R9 290
Crossfired 7950's

Both systems have the same 850W power supply. The faster one will be mine, and the slower one will become my son's gaming computer ;)

pair this way: i5 3570K + R9 290 and FX-8350 + Crossfire 7950s

keep for you the R9 290 + i5.

Who is more tech savvy and forgiving if a game has stutter or the PC has issues?

The one who can live with CFx stutters or issues should get that system.
Besides that I agree with the pairings Araxie mentioned.

My son is 11 and all the technology he uses (desktop, laptop, iPod touch) was purchased for OUR use.

I win ;)
