Video card whine?

So I had TF2 running but with my speakers turned down. I notice that there was a sort of whining buzzing noise. I assumed that my speakers were making it, but no, it's coming from my case. If I minimize to the desktop the sound immediately stops. If I go back to the game the noise starts again. I turned off all of my case fans and had a listen. It sure sounds like it is coming from the vicinity of the video card. I don't think it's the PSU. It could also be the MB behind the video card, but the fact that it starts when I go to a game that uses the video card makes me think video card.

Is this a problem? Normal? I haven't had any problems so far, but it's worrisome nonetheless. Now that I have heard it it is actually quite noticeable above all the other noise from my case.

Edit: I did some searching and someone on some forum said that it can be caused by super high FPS. I had vsync off in TF2 and was apparently getting around 250 FPS. I enabled vsync and the noise was reduced dramatically if not completely.
 
Sounds like its coilwhine, I have seen this happen on both powersupplies and videocards, Go on youtube and search for it, they have videos that show you first hand what it sounds like. From what I have read, its not going to break your card but if its still under warranty it can be resolved in most cases by sending it in

It's hit or miss. I had 2 7970s (a XFX DD and a GIgabyte Windforce) and both had coil whine. Then I had an Asus 680 that was great... then I got my current Asus 7970 DC2T and it's nice and quiet... My friend had a Sapphire 7970 OC that he sent back 3 times and still couldn't get one that didn't buzz like crazy....

Good luck getting it resolved. I hope you have more luck than I have.

probablt because the are sending the same card back. i would put a very smaa sharpie mark next t a compoment so it looks like it belongs abd see if does indeed getbthe same card back. reason i say this is because in their eyes the card is probably performing @ spec :(
 
They weren't sending the same cards back that we sent in... I was able to ID them because of the pictures I took, and they sent different cards back each time. It's just a consistent problem. They behaved differently also.. I have some video of the noise they make and each one has a slightly different sound.
 
Sounds like Coilwhine when the card is stressed.

Last cards I had that on were my venerable 2x 9600gt in sli. Both cards had it for the first month or so, drove me crazy. Ran them overclocked @ 100% stress for a month to get rid of it. Kinda make it or break it attitude since returning them for coilwhine is a crap shoot.

Yes excessive, but it works.
