I'm currently running a 9700 Pro in my box. I've had the card almost 2 years and its still performing admirally in most games. It was a bit anemic in Doom 3, but it handled HL2 well enough. My girlfriend and I just got into World of Warcraft last week and I'd like to upgrade her video card. She's running on a GF3 Ti200 (at 200/460) and it looks pretty bad when compared to my 9700 Pro. There are a lot of shadows missing, and she is getting "infinite loop" errors after playing for a while (I think this is heat related as the fan is dying on the card). In any case, I'd like to get her a nicer video card so that she can see what she is missing. She says she is fine with it, but it bugs the hell out of me seeing it run like crap.
So, now I'm looking at upgrading my video card and then rolling the 9700 Pro over to her computer. The current generation of video cards seem to have been out for a very long time. Is there something new around the corner (1-3 months)? It seems like it should be as I remember the 6800GT being THE card for Doom3 and that was back in early August.
I'm currently looking at a 6800nu from Leadtek ($273 from Newegg). Would that card before enough horsepower to run my gaming box at decent levels for the next 1 1/2 - 2 years? The 6800GT is the obvious next choice, but dropping $400 on a video card would probably kill me. I game primarily in 1280x1024, with usually no AA or AF turned on. I'm not against AA or AF, its just that it kills the frame rates on the 9700 Pro pretty significantly.
What do you guys think?
Thanks!
