Video card upgrade?

It depends what sort of CPU you have in that motherboard. If it's a nicely overclocked C2Q, then a 5870 would be a good bet. However, if it's a cheap C2D at stock clocks, then I think it might be better to get a cheaper card. Though to be honest, you'll see only slight improvement going from a 9800GT to a 260, and almost no improvement going to a 4850. Sure, fps will increase, but I don't think it's justified an upgrade.

No real reason for you to upgrade right now unless you're having trouble running games that you're interested in. A 9800GT is enough for most games at 1280x1024.

I'd think it'd be between the 260 core 216 and a 4870 as opposed to a 4850. Honestly just give it a week or two for the 5870s to make the rounds and snag yourself a 4890 from someone in the for sale/trade forum.

Or just wait for the 5870/5850 to become cheap :)

Wait for the 5850 to drop to $199, then do a video card and monitor upgrade :D

+1

Instead of saving up for a 5870, save up for a monitor and 5850. Probably cost about the same. The 5870 would be major overkill for the resolution you run.

Why is it every time a new card is released everyone tries to cram it down someones throat? This guy has an Sli mobo, a tiny low res monitor and the ability to add a 2nd 9800GT for $70 if bought used on the forums. Why oes he need to pay more than twice what he has to to increase his GPU power?

No offense guys but the 2 people recommending an HD 5850 are new to this forum and obviously new to the idea of common sense upgrades for a PC.

SLI/CF scale like absolute crap at 1280x1024.

I see little reason to upgrade at all, sounds like he just have the itch. I can only think of two games that a 9800GT cannot max out at 12x10 and that's Crysis and Stalker: CS

SLI can be a pain in the ass and does not always scale, not to mention the extra power, heat and noise.

IMO he could also sell his 9800 GT for the same $70 and for $50 more have a 4870...

I actually saw a 4890 for $125 A/R this week.

yeah exactly, having setup a couple SLI/crossfire systems I can say that they're not a great big ball of compatabillity, theres little annoyances in every corner. SLI/Crossfire is only a real option for intra-release upgrades, and top-of-the-line systems.

Are you somehow not satisfied with how your card is performing now? Batman push you into getting a new card? Playing the waiting game right now is an excellent idea: Nvidia is planning their GT300 for a near-xmas release (expect mid december), and when that comes out you might see ATI try to undercut them. While were also going to see a lot of block buster titles this year I suspect none of them will offer ground breaking graphics, meaning if you can postpone your upgrade until Q2 or Q3 of next year, the market is going to look entirely different --at least in pricing.

Of course we still don't know what games you primarily play and what ones you want to be able to play but I still vote for getting a 22" LCD now that way you can make use of a faster card when you get one.

Depending on the game/s you play 9800GT Sli may not be a bad idea seeing as you have an adequate PSU as-is and setting up Sli takes me about 5 mins on average so I honestly don't know why people say its a total pita. Honestly, if people with high end rigs can sli for extreme performance then why is it not okay to Sli to keep the hastle of selling then buying a new card down?

Everyone always wants to push someone into a new card because its what they say they would do but I bet they say get a new card because they dont't have multi gpu mobos or they have no clue how to hook up an sli bridge, enable Sli mode in the drivers then enable multi gpu mode in games.
