Video Card Upgrade Question

I am considering a few different options and wanted to get some feedback on what the best route would be to take. My 580 GTX recently died and EVGA sent me a new one which is still sealed in the box.

1. Should I try to sell the 580 GTX for $400ish and buy a 680 GTX
2. Should I buy another 580 GTX and setup SLI
3. Or should I just keep the single 580 until the next generation of Nvidia cards come out?

Right now I am only running dual 1920x1200 26in monitors so I am not maxing out the capacities of the 580 but I would like to setup a three monitor 2560 x 1440 configuration before the end of the year.

Thoughts?
 
The "next" gen of Nvidia cards are already out. You should sell the 580 and get the 670.

The 680 isn't a good value at it's current price compared to the 670.
 
If you can get someone to pay you $400 for a 580 let me know cause I have a nice bridge for him.

By next generation I was referring to the 780 or whatever Nvidia will decide to call it. Where would you recommend selling it? I was considering selling it on craigslist to avoid dealing with shipping.

This is true, unfortunately. No one will pay this much for even a bnib 580 as that's what a bnib 670 cost. Sell your 580 for 275 or so and shell out the difference for a 670 FTW if possible. Save your pennies and pick up another one in a few months and you'll be good to go. The difference from 580 to 670 is quite noticeable. ;)
 
shelling out an extra couple hundred dollars to upgrade from a gtx580 to a gtx670 isn't too bright of a move on the financial side. typically i would only upgrade when you gain a overall performance of 50% or greater. unless the 1.5gbs of mem on the gtx580 is crippling you hard at high res... i would just get a 2nd gtx580.

and anyone that says "get a gtx670/gtx680 so you can sli later down the line" was most likely said to the gtx580 during release making those types of arguments quite moot.

thats just my opinion though..
 
580sli with 1.5gb wouldn't do so well at 7680*1440 due to lack of VRAM and probably even power. Perhaps get one of those sexy 670 4gb cards and then another one. That's baller!
 
If your goal is three large monitors, then 2 GTX 580's may not be up to the task. If money is no object then sell your GTX 580 and purchase 2 GTX 670/80's. If money is an issue then stick with the GTX 580.
 
FYI: newegg has the evga 580GTX on sale for $260. I think a 660GTX is going to be announced soon that slots in the $300 price range. Your gonna have a hard time selling it for $400.
