I will try to make this quick and painless

I upgraded my system from a 9600xt to a BFG geforce 6800 oc (from the hot deals section). When I power on my system, 9 times out of 10 it will not start. The fans spin, a single light on my corsair pro will light up, power lights on case come on, and then a couple seconds later the lights on the ram will go out and nothing will happen. After a few tries, same thing only the lights on the ram will all light up and the system will start normally.

I have checked the seating of ram, memory, 12v line, etc. All seems well. Nothing else was moved before new video install, and I have still double-checked it all to be safe. The power supply is a 450 watt Enermax that is a couple years old. All power readings seem to be well in range. I have plugged in the 12v line to the video card as is required. Any ideas? I had the same problem with my old Abit GeForce4 ti4200 before I bought the 9600xt, but believed at the time that the ti4200 was the problem. Did not have this prob with the 9600xt in. I believe this may eliminate the new video card as the culprit. The new card has a partially copper hsf... too heavy?

Any help is appreciated. My system specs are below:

AMD AthlonXP 2200+ (at stock speed since problem cropped up)
1gb CorsairXMS 3200LL Pro
1 16x dvd, 1 52x cd-rw (both lite-on)
Enermax 450 watt ps
1 Maxtor 160gb HDD (non-sata), no FDD
1 cold cathode, 5 case fans not including ps
Current ambient temps: 23/33 degrees celsius (board/cpu)
Windows XP
4 usb devices, all on a powered usb hub so they arent drawing from the ps

Questions? Please ask! Reccomendations? Please submit.
 
Did you try putting your old card back in and seeing if it posts? If it does, RMA your new card is all I can tell ya.
 
Yes, I did just recently and it has not had a problem since.

But this is the EXACT same problem I had with the ti4200. It's still in the drawer, I should try it out, eh?
 
RMA your card then. I guess you can try the other card out, but wait for your exchange comes in if you want.
 
Ok, well.. I don't need to RMA the video card, because it's from the local Best Buy. I have thirty days. And I just dont think it is likely that it is the card. I am going to try the old, old one now.

:confused: you said with the new card shit was all fucked up and then you said you took it out and put in the old one at it worked... obviously something is fucked up and the culprit seems to be your cards. Take it back to best buy and exchange it for the same kind. If it still doesn't work, then there is some kind of compatiblity problem.

I am having this problem with two different video cards and one video card works just fine. The geforce4 ti4200, and the geforce 6800 oc are problematic. The 9600xt is working just fine. The 4200 and 6800 are much larger and heavier (especially the 6800).

Could there be a problem with the agp slot with a bad connection to the motherboard itself that is only evident when it is being weighed down heavily with the geforce cards?

Good point on the compatibility comment, this IS a revision 1 Abit nf7-s, so I am going to cruise the abit forums and see if anyone else has this problem. IF it was a compatibility prob then it would have to be the mobo, right?
 
You know, I'm not an expert on videocards, I'm just telling you about my experience.

One thing you might want to look into is what kind of AGP slot you have. My new gigabyte works with 4x and 8x cards but specifically says no 2x cards and even includes a seperate insert warning you of the fact.

Perhaps your mobo has that issue and both the cards you have tried are not compatible. I seriously doubt a weight issue has anything to do with it. Also, some cards require seperate power connection, make sure yours isn't one of them and if it is, give it some juice.
 
It does require a seperate 12v connection, but it was pluggedin and it still didn't work.

Both the mobo and vid card are 8x agp parts.

Still, it could be a compatibility problem. I know v1 of the nf7 was problematic for a lot of people. When I searched abit's forums I did notice a LOT of people with BOTH of these cards having issues. Some were similar to my prob, some weren't. Coincidence? I dunno.

My new power supply will be here today. I am going to take your advice and exchange the vid card today also. If neither of those things work, it HAS to be the mobo right?

By all means by opinions should not be considered the end all be all, but if Abit's forums have users complaining of the same issues, it is your mobo. Perhaps there are users there stating what cards did work, buy one of those or switch out the mobo. I don't know which would be cheaper in your case.

Well, at this point the vid card is good and new... the mobo is old and needing to be replaced anyway. I had planned to ask for a new mobo/cpu for christmas. I may just get one now.
