I was trying to determine the best path for a GPU upgrade. I am currently running a GTX 970 on a asrock z170m pro4s with 16 GB of ram and a i7 6700k.

CPU and ram wise I have plenty of horsepower but my GPU is starting to get long in the tooth and as I currently run at 1080p mostly I feel I could go both ways in terms of GPU vendors.

Would a RX480 and/or a GTX 1060 be a step backwards or should I just bite the bullet and get a GTX 1070?

Thanks for the insight.

Looks like rather a sidegrade to me. Introduction - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 Founders Edition Review

Figured it would be... Just trying to future proof my rig for the long term. If a 1070 is the way to go then so be it!

If you can afford it the 1080 would be the more worthwhile investment. 1070 is an upgrade, but for 600+ the 1080 is a much more substantial upgrade past the 970 than the 1070 is at 400+

I am intending on going 1440p at some point this year so my thoughts were to make sure I have a card that can push it.

1440 you want 8gb vram. Agree with the other guy. You want that 1080! 100+ fps in most current games at 1440.
