So this morning my system wouldn't power on. There's a red LED ON (never was before) on the back of the video card (Sapphire 6950 Toxic) below the 8 pin connection (there's an LED below the 6 pin and this one below the 8pin). I've emailed Sapphire to see what these LED's mean but I would guess its a power supply issue light. Waiting for answer.

After I had the PSU cable unplugged for some time, I was finally able to power on the system, but the blower on the video card goes to 100% and stays there and I get no video signal.

Plugging in an old 4870, I get a video signal but there's a lot of video corruption (used the card two days ago, had no problems). However this card only requires a 6+6pin not a 6+8pin like the 6950 Toxic.

So to me.. so far anyway, it seems like the issue is either the modular PCI-E cable or the whole PSU. So after work I'm planning on testing another modular cable and if I get same results, going to bring in the power supply (Corsair AX850) and exchange it.

But is it possible it could also be the motherboard?
 
It could be a power issue, I only usually get those LEDs up if the card isn't powered correctly.
 
I've only encountered it when a connector hasn't been plugged in properly, or forgotten altogether. Plugged the connector in, problem resolved.
 
Thanks, that gives me hope. I don't think the issue is not plugged in properly, but maybe the wire came out of the ferrule or has a short somewhere.
 
If it's a modular connector, do you have a spare you can use? The AX850 should have means for four connectors at once. Don't forget to test both the cable and the modular port on the PSU.
 
Well an update for someone if they're interested.

I took out the old 4870, put in the 6950 that was giving me troubles, and.... everything works fine :(

Sad face because I can't explain it. My only thought right now is that there was a lot of torque on the PCI-E power connector that slowly worked itself out to the point of causing a short on the next power up. Nothing got fried as taking them out and putting them back in seems to have solved it.
 
Make sure that everything is connected properly with the modular cable on the power supply end. I'm sure it's in correctly on the card end. Also some PSU's are labeled, make sure the 8 pin modular cable is in a +12v connector.
