Imagine these two rigs:

eVGA 680i SLi + e4300@3GHz + 2GB OCZ RAM

Asus M3N78-VM + X2 5600 + 4GB OCZ RAM

and in each respectively, an 8800GTS 512MB & 8800GTS 640MB

BOTH have Windows 7 RC 64 Bit installed & updated

suddenly, the second rig with the 640MB started having artifacting and freezing during 2d & immediate lockup about 10 seconds into anything 3d (aquamark 3.0)

so I uninstalled and reinstalled drivers, used the onboard (M3n78-vm has that) and everything worked fine, so I assumed it was the video card, and promptly decided to confirm that by switching cards in the different rigs.

and then EVERYTHING WORKED THAT WAY!

so needless to say, I'm ungrateful, and I want things to work the other way. I'd like to know if any of you guys have every experienced this, or if you have any guidance.

Thanks in advance

PS in each rig? Also if you havent 'cleaned' case recently, grab can of air and get to work. Sounds like either heat issue or lack of good power.

In first Rig, Ultra X2 550W, second rig, Antec Earthwatts 500W

UPDATE!

swapped PSU's same problem exists if 640MB is used with AMD/Asus combo, so I'm thinking it's a micro-fissure/seating issue?

EDIT: also used a GXT 400W GPU 5.25" inch bay power supply, has no effect on the incompatibility, so I am definitely thinking its seating

also, the exact same issue on the AMD/Asus setup was confirmed with a fresh install of (GASP) Windows Vista on a COMPLETELY seperate HDD

also, load was tested with 640MB card on Intel/eVGA system, worked flawlessly
