With so many video cards to choose from I was wondering what the people here at [H] would suggest. I'm looking to for sure stay under $200 and would like something more like $150 that will give me good frame rates in the latest games such as hl2 and doom3. I was looking at such cards as the powercolor 9600XT, sapphire 9600XT, chaintech 5900. What's the difference between lite versions, SE versions, etc?

A vanilla 9700 is probably your best bet around the $150 range for right now. The nvidia 6600GT should also be a good deal at $170, but for right now it is only available in PCI-e (the AGP 6600GTs are currently well over $200).

If your budget is 150-200 you shouldn't have to settle for a 9600, since you almost certainly should be able to find a 9700-9800 at that price, and the performance will be strictly better.

Those are all over $200

isn't that a vanilla 9800 not a pro?

Thought it would be OK if I went $20 over, sorry.

It's not a pro, I misread it. But the reviews are good.

spend 200 and get a 6800NU. best bang! yes CUSA and PNY have alot of defective cards but hey! for 200 just make sure b4 u leave the store u check ur card out. if everything is intact. most likely the card will be fine. if something fell off. just ask for another card and check that one as well.

Why does everyone keep suggesting the 6800nu when it's not even available!!!!?!?!?!?!?

Because for the money it is twice the card of any other option.

It is like this: BMW is having a sale on M5's for $15,000. you want to spend around that much, but can't find one in stock in your town. The M5 is more than twice any other car you can get for $15,000, we don't want to see you buy a Kia when if you look around you should be able to find a BMW for that price.

A 9800pro is hardly the 'Kia' of video cards. And a 6800 is certainly not twice as fast.

infact. the 9800 pro is a bad card right now becuz it sells for almost the same as the 6600 GT and the 6800 NU. for that price range, the 9800 pro is nothing but crap. it WAS a good card for its age and still is. but for that price and if u compare the other cards in that range. the 9800 pro doesn't even stand a chance.
