Just build a new pc and have everything but the video card to get it up and running I would like to go in surround 3 (maybe 6 if possible) at a later date and want to know what card(s) would be best to get?

1x 6990 (new)
2x 1.5GB 580's (used)
3x referrenced 6950's (used)

I plan on spending $700-750'ish

what does the rest of this new pc look like in DETAIL including power supply? and what resolution are you wanting to play at? do you already have 3 monitors?

With 3, and maybe 6 displays, you are going to want a bunch of video ram and horsepower. (guessing your talking about current games and not 6 screen solitaire, not that there's anything wrong with that)

After a small rebate, these are really close to your amount
GTX 570 2.5gb cards

The 6950 Toxic 2gb edition cards look to be killer as well, has the bios switch to enable the shaders like the 6970, already clocked at 880mhz like the 6970's, and close to your budget as well.

The 1.5gb ram on the 580's is of concern, depending on the monitor resolution, i'd opt for the 2.5gb 570's in lieu of those.

I'm not sure about 6 displays, i'd venture to say you'll prob need a TON of gpu horsepower to drive that kind of resolution. Which means it'll depend on your motherboard, as your only option might be two 6990's (or GTX 590's) if you don't have 4 slots (that can be used at the same time) and the GTX 590's don't have enough ram on them to be worth the price.

And of course like cannondale06 pointed out, specs of your system and PSU are important as well.

We'll need the details of your computer.

First, good luck finging a 6990. I absolutely stole mine off eBay in the middle of the night, the guy really wanted a sale and I was just lucky. I paid retail for a 2 month old MSI model, but there just aren't any anywhere except ebay and they are over $1000 thanks to the bitcoin craze.

I had three 6950s, Crossfire doesn't scale well in some games, just as Surround doesn't in some.

The GX 580 is a really nice card, I have two in my son's computer.....very stout and run Surround well with little effort.

You need a big PSU for any of those combos though.....850W minimum and 1000W is a good idea. I use a Corsair AX 1200 myself.:D

sorry for not posting the rest of the system.
so far its on a I7 2600k
Gigabyte UD7-B3 (P67)
16 GB Ram
Antec 1200w PSU

I do not have the monitor I want yet as I plan on purchasing 2 of them in another 2 weeks (next payday...lol) though I am still unsure what screen to get.

I would like to purchase them this week along with my waterooling parts parts if possible.
