My HD5870 just bit the dust. The system boots up fine with another card.

I'm looking for a PCIE card that will compliment my CPU without being GPU bound.

My system

Intel i7 860 2.8 GHz, not overclocking.

Gigabyte P55-UD3R motherboard

OCZ 850 W power supply

1680 × 1050 resolution

Windows 7-64 bit

What do you recommend?

TIA

Why PCIE2.0?You won't be able to upgrade from a 5870 very much if you insist on that condition.

PCI-E isn't a crutch if it was AGP it would be =)

Get a EVGA Nvidia they they don't break as often depends what you want to spend I would get a 770 GTX or something but a 760 is like a 100.00 cheaper I just googled.

3.0 cards are backwards compatable, what's your budget?

I don't have a budget for this.

Edit Since it's a replacement, I'll spend what I need to get everything out of my processor. I'm not overclocking if that helps. The resolution I'm running is low, so I know that I'll be easily GPU bound. Let's say 500 USD if you want. I just don't want to spend the money when I can't get the benefit from it.

Thanks, that's good to know.

Yeah at 1680x1050 anything beyond a 7950[R9 280] or GTX 760 isn't going to stretch its legs on your 2.8Ghz i7 860. So while you can spend more $$ on a R9 290 or GTX780 you might not get the value there. It also depends on the games you're playing as some as more cpu intensive than others

How about a 760/770 and a CM 212+ to overclock the cpu?

R9 270. You really don't need more with that CPU and resolution. Its a good card for a good price. and will give you a solid increase in performance over your old GPU.

212+ , 212 EVO, Freezer 13. GPU wise PCI-E 3.0 means nothing right now don't be concerned about that no tangible benefits. 280(soon 285) 7970 at max Radeon wise, 660Ti-760-770 Nvidia wise. That resolution will hold back the cards from stretching their legs for sure but they still will drive it extremely well and if you choose to do so and can snag a good price on say a 7970(280x) you could always downclock the card to save heat and power while still having a ton of performance. This way here you can see where the bottlenecks happen in relation to clock speeds and go from there.

By all means make sure youre PSU is sufficient 850w is ample but double check the specific model to be sure.

Ordered a GTX 770 and a CM 212 EVO for my CPU.

If the 212 doesn't fit, I'll cope.

Thanks everyone.

Sounds like a perfect combination. Please respond back to this thread after you have it installed and let us know how you like it. Also if you have a 1080p TV with HDMI, you can use that as a monitor. A GTX 770 would be awesome for that scenario also.

:)
