I'm looking to get a cheap(er) video card since I got my hands on a PC for a very good deal. Was going to go with something like a 3850, but looked into cards like the 9600GSO and 9600GT. I saw that in most cases the 9600GSO was faster than the 3850 and in some cases, the 3870. But as usual with nvidia, there are too many different variations of the 9600GSO. I've seen cards that are 192-bit with 96 stream processors; ones that are 128-bit with 48 stream processors; some are 256-bit with GDDR3, but with less memory. I don't know what the heck is what! I have a lot of PC's, and when I upgrade one I usually upgrade the rest; it's a "trickle down" process. My son currently has an x1800xt (512mb). Whatever I get, I'd like for it to be better than that card so that I can pass his x1800xt down to the next PC. But looking at the different versions of 9600GSO, I don't know if I can be guaranteed for it to be better than his x1800xt. Would ANY of the 9600GSO models beat the x1800xt? I dont want to go through the trouble of taking his out only to find out I "downgraded".
