I just have a Hanns g 22" monitor has recommended Res of 1680x1050.is there any advantage to getting a 6990 over a 6980 or 6980 over a 6970?Right now I have a 5450.lots if issues running games.
Basics so far looking at i7 3820 Asus p9x79 mobo ddr3 2100gskill memory 16gig diblotech. 775 w psu
Just not sure how video cards relate, are they related to Res?

1680x1050 is a very low resolution; even for 1080p more than one GPU isn't recommended without a specific use case such as stereoscopic 3D/120Hz or using the highest selectable settings in the newest games at 60Hz.

Best recommendation is an HD 7850+, or for Nvidia a GTX670. You're not likely to be able to tell the difference though.

For your system, have you purchased it yet? Going X79 makes very little practical sense outside of using four GPUs, and not just a pair of HD6990s or GTX690s, unless you also need more than 32GB of RAM or can actually make real use of two additional hyper-threaded cores. That 3820 is actually slower than a 3770k, and is also harder to over-clock.

If you're looking at used cards the 6950 2GB simply can't be beat right now price to performance, and at that resolution should serve you well for years to come. If you'll only buy new a 7850 is a decent choice, or a GTX 670 if you want to go the Nvidia route. Dual GPU (6990s, Crossfire, SLI, etc) shouldn't even be on your radar at that res, you are much better off with a single middle-of-the-road to quick card.

As the above poster said, Z77 makes far more sense for most people vs. X79 due to the lower cost of CPUs and boards along with better support for PCIe 3.0 and USB 3.0, so unless you're doing a ton of work with virtual machines and things like that (which I doubt given your OP) I'd get a Z77 and a compatible chip.

Hell, I'll sell you a stock HD6950 2GB that's in pristine condition in the original retail box with all of the packaging. It's even the unclock-able kind.
