So i'm doing a new build. An i7 build x58 ect....

I am debating on the video card solution. I was going to get one of the new 5850's or maybe a 5870....and maybe one day go crossfire.

Well I just got a $50 gift card for bb, and then I saw that the GTX 285OC $250 + tax and shipping @ BB online.

I can afford to buy two of these right now for sli. I'd only end up spending $450 dollars on the whole setup. Would this be a great running set of cards or should I just wait for the next shipment of 5850 or 70's to newegg and buy one and then eventually upgrade to crossfire in the future?

that is a pretty good deal, but i would go with a 5850 and xfire later (when prices drop) since you kind of "future-proof" with dx11 support and you also get a decent performance boost. more importantly, what resolution do you plan to game at? sli or xfire might be overkill depending.

If I was in your position now I would certainly pick up a 5850/5870 vs. 285, no contest, e specially if you are getting an i7 setup.

Why spend similar/more money on old technology that performs slower/similarly?

sell ur bb gift card for like $45 and pick up 2 5850's as posted above.. much better choice

5850 > GTX 285. Don't sink over 200 bucks into old tech. Use the gift certificate to get something else you need. Like maybe a new video game or power supply or something.

PS BB Outlet usually sells refurbs. Don't waste your money on a refurbed card that's also old tech.

Not to thread jack but I am in a similar situation. I was able to pick up a E8400/mobo combo from frys fairly cheap and I have some spare ram, hd, case, etc around. Just needed to pick a more current video card and saw the BB deal for the gtx285.

I currently have a shuttle sn68sg with a 9600GT and figure this would be a nice little upgrade. I usually play at 1900x1200 res. I just want to be able to play Diablo whenever it comes out.

Another reason I am leaning towards this card is I want to mess with installing Snow Leopard on here and the gtx285 is supported whereas no support yet for the newer ATI cards. So what do you guys think? With the hardware I already have, should I get the 285 for this or just wait for some SL ati driver support?

solution: ditch snow leopard.. and get the 5850..

I went with the 5870.

It needs a beefy CPU, which the I7 is. And later if you want to xfire, the I7 is the ONLY way to go.
